Study Design: This is a report of methods and tools for selection of task and individual configurations targeted for voluntary movement, standing, stepping, blood pressure stabilization, and facilitation of bladder storage and emptying using tonic-interleaved excitation of the lumbosacral spinal cord.
Objectives: This study aimed to present strategies used for selection of stimulation parameters for various motor and autonomic functions.
Conclusions: Tonic-interleaved functionally focused neuromodulation targets a myriad of consequences from spinal cord injury with surgical implantation of the epidural electrode at a single location. This approach indicates the sophistication of the human spinal cord circuitry and its important role in the regulation of motor and autonomic functions in humans.

The visceral organ-brain axis, mediated by vagal sensory neurons, is essential for maintaining various physiological functions. Here, we investigate the impact of liver-projecting vagal sensory neurons on energy balance, hepatic steatosis, and anxiety-like behavior in mice under obesogenic conditions. A small subset of vagal sensory neurons innervate the liver and project centrally to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius, area postrema, and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, and peripherally to the periportal areas in the liver.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition characterized by significant sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunction, often following trauma or nerve injury. Historically known as causalgia and reflex sympathetic dystrophy, CRPS manifests as severe, disproportionate pain, often accompanied by hyperalgesia, allodynia, trophic changes, and motor impairments. Classified into type I (without nerve injury) and type II (associated with nerve damage), CRPS exhibits a complex pathophysiology involving peripheral and central sensitization, neurogenic inflammation, maladaptive brain plasticity, and potential autoimmune and psychological influences.
