The extreme precision of optical atomic clocks has led to an anticipated redefinition of the second by the International System of Units. Furthermore, accuracies pushing the boundary of 1 part in 10 and beyond will enable new applications, such as in geodesy and tests of fundamental physics. The to optical transition in Lu has exceptionally low sensitivity to external perturbations, making it suitable for practical clock implementations with inaccuracy at or below 10. Here, we perform high-accuracy comparisons between two Lu references using correlation spectroscopy. A comparison at different magnetic fields is used to obtain a quadratic Zeeman coefficient of -4.89264(88) Hz/mT for the reference frequency. With a subsequent comparison at low field, we demonstrate agreement at the low 10 level, statistically limited by the averaging time of 42 hours. The evaluated uncertainty in the frequency difference is 9 × 10 and the lowest reported in comparing independent optical references.

Amyloid capture and aggregation inhibition by human serum albumin.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Departamento de Química Física, Facultade de Ciencias, Campus Terra, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, 27002 Lugo, Spain. Electronic address:

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregation, primarily involving the peptides Aβ40 and Aβ42. Human serum albumin (HSA) has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent due to its ability to bind Aβ, inhibit aggregation, and promote disaggregation. This study quantitatively examined the interactions of HSA with both monomeric and aggregated forms of Aβ40 and Aβ42 using fluorescence techniques, including bulk steady-state fluorescence, fluorescence anisotropy, time-resolved fluorescence, and Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS).

This study investigates camel milk protein structural dynamics during digestion using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Two-Dimensional Infrared (2D-IR) homo-correlation and hetero-correlation analysis. The synchronous 2DIR homo-correlation map reveals that NH bending and C-N stretching vibrations (amide II) are sensitive to digestion, indicating significant impacts on secondary structures. The asynchronous 2DIR homo-correlation indicates a stepwise process, where initial disruptions in NH interactions precede changes in CO stretching vibrations (amide I), highlighting the sequence of structural alterations during protein unfolding and degradation.

The concept of inert matrix fuel (IMF) has been proposed to utilize the energetic value of Pu and transmute minor actinides in nuclear reactors. In order to offset the initial reactivity of nuclear fuel, gadolinium (Gd) is employed as a burnable poison, owing to its high neutron absorption cross-section. To gain insights into the radiation stability and influence of grain boundaries on irradiation behaviour, 5 mol% Gd-doped ceria samples, sintered at varying temperatures, were subjected to irradiation using 400 Kr ions.

Putting Charge Transfer Degree as a Bridge Connecting Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Photocatalysis.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Jilin University, State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, 2699 Qianjin Street, 130012, Changchun, CHINA.

To date, few systematic approach has been established for predicting catalytic performance by analyzing the spectral information of molecules adsorbed on photocatalyst surfaces. Effective charge transfer (CT) between the semiconductor photocatalysts and surface-absorbed molecules is essential for enhancing catalytic activity and optimizing light energy utilization. This study aimed to validate the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on the CT enhancement mechanism in investigating the CT process during semiconductor photocatalytic C-C coupling model reactions.
