A journey through the field of fish hearinga).

Published: May 2023

My interest in fish bioacoustics was ignited more than 50 years ago and resulted in a zigzag time travel between various interesting problems that were unsettled at the time. The present paper gives a brief overview of the main topics I have worked on in the field of fish hearing, i.e., auditory function of the swim bladder, directional hearing, function of the lateral line system, and infrasound sensitivity. Rather than being a comprehensive review of these issues, the paper is autobiographical and limited. The aim is to show young scientists that experimental science can be exciting, diverse, and rewarding-and open doors to a rich collegial network, collaboration, and friendships.

Progestin use as a contraceptive has increased exponentially in the last few decades, as has its disposal in the environment. These synthetic hormones can impair the physiology and behavior of non-target organisms, such as fish. In this study, we evaluated the effects of exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of etonogestrel (ETO, 3.

Developing dietary formulations for aquaculture that meet nutritional requirements is essential to production, as nutrition is key for fish growth and health. However, novel dietary formulations may induce malnutrition, which is complex to evaluate and often requires animal sacrifice. Therefore, finding reliable non-lethal biomarkers to diagnose malnutrition in fish is important.

The concentration of metals/metalloids in settleable particulate matter (SePM) from industrial area and in the muscles were determined in the estuarine fish, Centropomus parallelus, after 96 h-exposure to different SePM concentrations. Antioxidant defenses, oxidative damage and neurotoxicity were also determined. The risk for human consumption was evaluated by estimating daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) and compared with fish collected close to the industries.

The adap1 (ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating protein [ArfGAP] with dual pleckstrin homology [PH] domains 1) gene is predominantly expressed in the mouse brain and is important in neural differentiation and development. However, the functions of adap1 in morphogenesis, locomotor activity, and behaviors in vertebrates are not fully understood. Whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) analysis revealed that adap1 was widely expressed in the zebrafish brain, including the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain, during early embryogenesis.

The crucian carp (Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758) is a declining native European cyprinid, inhabiting small water bodies, primariliy threatened by climate change, anthropogenic impacts and invasive relative the Prussian carp. Despite conservation efforts across Europe, data on Carphatian Basin populations remain scarce. This study analyzed nine natural populations (257 individuals) in Hungary using thirteen microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA COI sequencing (187 individuals).
