In Piaget's 3-mountains task, 3D objects - a cube, cone and sphere - sit on a square tabletop. They are portrayed in 2D pictures as (projections to the sides) such as one with a square on the left, a triangle in the middle and a circle on the right. Three objects offer six elevations, of which four are possible and two impossible. The possibles are elevations from the sides of the table - front, left, right and rear. In the impossibles, an object in the corner of the table is shown in the middle of an elevation. Sighted, sighted-blindfolded, early- and late-blind adults judged the elevations as to side of the table or impossible. The results suggest similar spatial abilities across groups. The impossible options had mid-range accuracy for all groups, with reaction times like possible options. The sighted and blind participants may consider possible and impossible options sequentially, one item at a time.

Introduction And Importance: Follicular cystitis (FC) is a rare inflammatory disorder of the bladder that predominantly affects women. The exact cause of FC remains largely unknown, although it has been associated with inflammatory processes and bacterial infections, particularly following urinary tract infections. Regarding orphan diseases, like follicular cystitis, where large-scale trials seem virtually impossible, case reports find their place and guide the scientific community to find the best course of action.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) is an urgent bacterial threat to public health, with only a few treatment options and a > 50% fatality rate. Although several resistance mechanisms are understood, it is still impossible to predict which mutations are most likely to occur. Here, we demonstrate that independent samples of Ab, exposed to different carbapenems with escalating concentrations, show concentration- and carbapenem-dependent trends in β-lactamase-isoform expression.

Guided Bone Regeneration in the Posterior Mandible Using a Resorbable Metal Magnesium Membrane and Fixation Screws: A Case Report.

Case Rep Dent

December 2024

Department of Prosthodontics, Geriatric Dentistry and Craniomandibular Disorder, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Aßmannshauser Straße 4-6 14197, Berlin, Germany.

Due to bone loss, implant placement in the posterior mandible is often impossible without prior augentative procedures. The reconstruction of bone defects with horizontal and vertical components using particulated bone grafts requires the placement of a mechanically stable structure for stabilization of the grafting material. Although titanium-reinforced membranes and titanium meshes have been shown to be effective in this indication, the necessity of their removal, often in a separate surgical procedure, is seen as a disadvantage.

Managing patients with severe fixation of intra-abdominal contents, known as frozen abdomen, often creates a vicious cycle of tissue injury that further prolongs open abdomen resolution. We share the management course of a 28-year-old male status post motor vehicle accident with traumatic pancreatitis and complex liver injury. Following multiple laparotomies for abdominal wash out, he developed a frozen abdomen and an entero-atmospheric fistula (EAF) through granulated bowel.

Meniscal injuries represent one of the main causes of intra-articular knee pain, especially in young patients, athletes or those with a high demand for physical activity; representing a challenge for the arthroscopist surgeon due to the great complexity that some of these injuries can present. Currently, the advances that have been implemented in arthroscopy allow us to repair meniscal injuries that in the past were considered irreparable. Although our priority is to preserve as much of the meniscus as possible, there are cases in which the injury reaches such complexity that this is impossible, with partial or total meniscectomy being the only therapeutic option.
