AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Purpose: Dietary supplement use is common in Northern Europe. Many dietary supplements contain 100% of nutrient reference values (NRV) of micronutrients. This study investigates the contribution of dietary supplements to micronutrient intake, the prevalence of excess intake of micronutrients, and parental characteristics of dietary supplement use in Danish children.

Methods: Data on 499 4-10-year-old children from the Danish National Survey of Diet and Physical Activity 2011-2013 were analysed using non-parametric statistics to compare micronutrient intake from the diet and dietary supplements to the reference intake (RI), and to the tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for users and non-users of dietary supplements. Furthermore, characteristics of the parents of users and non-users of dietary supplements were examined by logistic regression analysis.

Results: Sixty-four percent of the children were dietary supplement users. Multivitamin-mineral supplements were the most frequently used type of supplement (60%). Children of never-smokers were more likely to use supplements than children of smokers. Users had significantly higher total intakes of 15 micronutrients compared to non-users. Intakes of vitamin A, zinc, and iodine from the diet alone exceeded ULs in 12-30% of the children. Use of dietary supplements gave rise to 21-73% of children in exceedance of the aforementioned three ULs as well as the UL for iron (6-45%).

Conclusion: Dietary supplement use was common among 4-10-year-old Danish children and resulted in a considerable proportion of users exceeding the ULs for vitamin A, zinc, iodine, and iron. The long-term health consequences of exceeding these ULs for children are unknown.

Objectives: To investigate various supplements that improve insulin resistance, hormonal status, and oxidative stress in overweight or obese women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Methods: A literature search was conducted on four different databases, which led to the discovery of twenty - five randomized controlled trials (RCTs). These RCTs evaluated the efficacy of various supplements in improving insulin resistance (IR), hormonal status, and oxidative stress among overweight or obese women diagnosed with PCOS.

The probiotic strain Nissle 1917 (EcN) with high biocompatibility and susceptibility to genetic modification is often applied in bacterial therapies for cancer. However, most studies have used plasmids as vectors to construct engineering strains from EcN. Plasmid-based expression systems suffer from genetic instability, and they need antibiotic selective pressure to maintain high copy number.

Contamination of chars with dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB) significantly limits their use and hinders their deployment in the circular bioeconomy, specifically in applications that may lead to dietary exposure. Here, for the first time, we review the levels of contamination of chars produced from pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) with dl-PCB congeners. We conduct a detailed and critical examination of the role played by the processing parameters, such as temperature and residence time, and the reaction mechanisms, to detoxify the biomass under an oxygen-free atmosphere during its valorisation.

This review explores the bidirectional relationship between the human microbiome and SARS-CoV-2 infection, elucidating its implications for COVID-19 susceptibility, severity, and therapeutic strategies. Metagenomic analyses reveal notable alterations in microbiome composition associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, impacting disease severity and clinical outcomes. Dysbiosis within the respiratory, gastrointestinal, oral, and skin microbiomes exacerbates COVID-19 pathology through immune dysregulation and inflammatory pathways.
