Presence of emerging pollutants (EPs), aka Micropollutants (MPs) in the freshwater environments is a severe threat to the environment and human beings. They include pharmaceuticals, insecticides, industrial chemicals, natural hormones, and personal care items and the pollutants are mostly present in wastewater generated from urbanization and increased industrial growth. Even concentrations as low as ngL or mgL have proven ecologically lethal to aquatic biota. For several years, the biodegradation of various Micropollutants (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has been a significant area of research worldwide, with many chemical compounds being discovered in various water bodies. As aquatic biota spends most of their formative phases in polluted water, the impacts on aquatic biota are obvious, indicating that the environmental danger is substantial. In contrast, the impact of these contaminants on aquatic creatures and freshwater consumption is more subtle and manifests directly when disrupting the endocrine system. Research and development activities are expected to enable the development of ecologically sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient treatments for practical systems in the near future. Therefore, this review aims to understand recent emerging pollutants discovered and the available treatment technologies and suggest an innovative and cost-effective method to treat these EPs, which is sustainable and follows the circular bioeconomy.

Abamectin is an insecticide, miticide and nematicide that has been extensively used in agriculture for many years. The excessive use of abamectin inevitably pollutes water and soil and might even cause adverse effects on aquatic biota. However, it is currently unclear how abamectin exposure causes neurotoxicity in aquatic organisms.

Technology-critical elements (TCEs) refer to the elements that play an important role in many emerging technologies and the production of advanced materials, and these include lanthanides, tungsten and vanadium. Actinides, Tl, and Pb, which also belong to TCEs, are abundantly used in power generation, industrial applications, and modern agricultural practices. The information on the influence of these elements on the aquatic environment and biota is still rather scarce.

Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP), a sulfated polysaccharide, has been widely used in Asia. However, its digestion process and utilization by gut microbiota remain poorly understood. In this study, the in vitro simulated digestion and fermentation were used to analyze the digestibility of ULP.

The extent of alien taxa impacts on river ecosystem health is unclear, but their frequency continues to rise. We investigated 1) the prevalence of including alien taxa in common bioindicators used in river bioassessment, 2) the effect of alien taxa on the richness and abundance of natives, and 3) whether including alien taxa in bioassessment tools increased their sensitivity to river degradation. In the 17 countries analyzed fish represented the greatest number of alien species (1726), followed by macrophytes (925), macroinvertebrates (556), and diatoms (7).

Chironomidae have a wide distribution in Neotropical aquatic ecosystems and are predominant in the macroinvertebrate biota of these ecosystems, such as shallow lakes and swamps. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in research efforts aimed at understanding the biology of chironomid, and research on the bionomy of this group is still limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the growth and development of Chironomus calligraphus and Goeldichironomus holoprasinus, maintained under controlled laboratory conditions.
