Preeclampsia (PE) is a prevalent and severe pregnancy complication that significantly impacts maternal and perinatal health. Epidemiological studies and animal experiments have demonstrated that PE adversely affects the cardiovascular and nervous systems of offspring, increasing their risk of hypertension and renal pathology. However, the mechanisms underlying this increased risk remain unclear.

Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4), a key protein involved in lipoprotein metabolism, has diverse effects. There is an association between Angptl4 and diabetic kidney disease; however, this association has not been well investigated. We show that both podocyte- and tubule-specific ANGPTL4 are crucial fibrogenic molecules in diabetes.

Background: EMCN (endomucin), an endothelial-specific glycocalyx component, was found to be highly expressed by the endothelium of the renal glomerulus. We reported an anti-inflammatory role of EMCN and its involvement in the regulation of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) activity through modulating VEGFR2 (VEGF receptor 2) endocytosis. The goal of this study is to investigate the phenotypic and functional effects of EMCN deficiency using the first global EMCN knockout mouse model.

Acute kidney injury (AKI), typically caused by ischemia, is a common clinical complication with a poor prognosis. Although proteinuria is an important prognostic indicator of AKI, the underlying causal mechanism remains unclear. In vitro studies suggest that podocytes have high ATP demands to maintain their structure and function, however, analyzing their ATP dynamics in living kidneys has been technically challenging.
