Background: Owing to the increase in both intravenous drug injections and intracardiac and vascular interventional treatments among drug users, the incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) involving the tricuspid valve, which sits between the two right heart chambers, has gradually increased. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of different surgical procedures for tricuspid infective endocarditis (TIE).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed fifty-six patients who underwent tricuspid valve surgery at our hospital from January 2006 to August 2019. All patients were diagnosed with TIE and indicated a need for surgery. Perioperative and follow-up data were collected to summarize and analyze the clinical outcomes of different surgical approaches, including tricuspid valvuloplasty (TVP) and tricuspid valve replacement (TVR) for TIE.

Results: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, aortic cross-clamp (ACC) time, postoperative mechanical ventilation time, and intensive care unit (ICU) stay time were shorter in the TVP group than in the TVR group. Additionally, the incidence of red blood cell transfusion and postoperative complications was lower in the TVP group than in the TVR group. The postoperative 30-day mortality rates were similar between both the groups. Fifty-two patients were followed up for an average of 5.50 ± 3.79 years. The postoperative 3-, 5-, and 7-year survival rates were 100%, 100%, and 95.5% in the TVP group and 96.7%, 96.7%, and 96.7% in the TVR group, respectively. The 5-year and 10-year reoperation rates were 0% and 0% in the TVP group and 6.7% and 20% in the TVR group, respectively.

Conclusion: Both TVR and TVP for TIE significantly improved the functional status of the heart with satisfactory efficacy. TVP was found to be superior to TVR in reducing the need for postoperative blood transfusions, reducing the risk of postoperative complications, and reducing the need for long-term reoperations.

Background: Transvenous pacemakers (TVP) and leadless pacemakers (LP) are two reliable permanent modalities for the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Several observational studies explored the safety and efficacy of the two devices. The aim of this meta-analysis study is to present a comparative analysis of the safety of leadless versus transvenous pacemakers.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of two prophylactic strategies in preventing shunt infections in pediatric patients undergoing ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery.

Methods: This retrospective study included pediatric patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery between 2017 and 2024. Patients were divided into two groups based on the prophylactic method used: Group 1 (VS) where the shunt was washed with vancomycin solution before placement, and Group 2 (TVP) where vancomycin powder was applied to the subgaleal and subcutaneous tissues after shunt placement.

Background: Leadless cardiac pacemakers (LCPs) are emerging as viable alternatives to conventional transvenous pacemakers (TVPs). This study aimed to systematically compare the postoperative outcomes of LCPs and TVPs based on available published studies.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of literature comparing outcomes from LCP and TVP implantations.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how mitral valve prolapse (MVP) affects heart structure, particularly focusing on the right side of the heart, in patients without significant regurgitation.
  • - Out of 49 MVP patients and 54 healthy controls, findings revealed that patients with MVP had enlarged tricuspid annuli and right atrial volumes compared to controls, even if they experienced tricuspid valve prolapse (TVP).
  • - The study concluded that changes in right heart structures in MVP patients should be carefully monitored, as increased tricuspid annular size was linked to higher TAPSE values, indicating a potential need for alternative measurements in assessing heart function.

Alternative protein sources with greater nutritional value and a lower environmental footprint have recently attracted interest in the production of meat substitutes. However, it is required that these alternatives mimic the texture and structure of meat. This study investigated varying ratios of textured vegetable proteins (TVP) to larvae (brown mealworm; TM) with the addition of transglutaminase (TG) to determine the quality characteristics of these emulsions.
