Global projections indicate that approximately 500 Mha of new arable land will be required to meet crop demand by 2050. Applying a dynamic phosphorus (P) pool simulator under different socioeconomic scenarios, we find that cropland expansion can be avoided with less than 7% additional cumulative P fertilizer over 2006-2050 when comparing with cropland expansion scenarios, mostly targeted at nutrient-depleted soils of sub-Saharan Africa. Additional P fertilizer would replenish P withdrawn from crop production, thereby allowing higher productivity levels. We also show that further agronomic improvements such as those that allow for better (legacy) P use in soils could reduce both P outflows to freshwater and coastal ecosystems and the overall demand for P fertilizer.

Non-grain production of cropland (NGPCL) is a common consequence of rapid urbanization, but excessive NGPCL threatens food security and sustainable cropland use. However, the evolutionary processes and mechanisms of different NGPCL types remain largely unknown, compromising the scientific basis for NGPCL management. Thus, taking rapidly urbanized Deqing as the study area, this research constructed an NGPCL theoretical framework from the perspective of agricultural location, classified NGPCL types using Landsat images, random forest algorithm and Google Earth Engine, and revealed their spatiotemporal changes and different influencing factors through the Multinomial Logit Regression model, and provided targeted zoning and categorized policy suggestions.

The decline of insects is a global concern, yet identifying the factors behind it remains challenging due to the complexity of potential drivers and underlying processes, and the lack of quantitative historical data on insect populations. This study assesses 92 potential drivers of insect decline in West Germany, where significant declines have been observed. Using data from federal statistical offices and market surveys, the study traces changes in landscape structure and agricultural practices over 33 years.

The increasing global demand for meat and dairy products, fueled by rapid industrialization, has led to the expansion of Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs) in the United States (US). These operations, often found in clusters, generate large amounts of manure, posing a considerable risk to water quality due to the concentrated waste streams they produce. Accurately mapping AFOs is essential for effective environmental and disease management, yet many facilities remain undocumented due to variations in federal and state regulations.

Siberia occupies vast areas underlain by permafrost, and understanding its land cover changes is important for ecological environmental protection in a warming climate. Based on the land cover and climate datasets, we analyzed the land cover changes and their drivers in Siberia from 1992 to 2020. The results show that ① From 1992 to 2020, the areas of evergreen needleleaf trees and deciduous needleleaf trees in Siberia decreased by 9% and 2.
