Cancer is a major health problem with significant morbidity and mortality. In addition, plants are a source of metabolites with diverse biological properties, including antitumor potential. In this study, we investigated the in vitro murine lymphoma L5178Y-R cell growth inhibition, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) toxicity and proliferation, and antioxidant, hemolytic, and anti-hemolytic activities of methanol extracts from 15 plants of traditional use in Mexico. caused the highest tumor cell growth inhibition with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) of 29.10 µg/mL and a selectivity index >34.36 compared with those of PBMC, whereas showed the highest lymphoproliferative activity from 200 µg/mL compared with that induced by concanavalin A. In addition, showed an antioxidant effect (IC = 2.86 µg/mL) higher than that of ascorbic acid. Regarding the hemolytic and anti-hemolytic activity, all extracts presented significant anti-hemolytic activity. The extract of is emerging as a possible source of effective antineoplastic compounds.

Nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) are heme-based monooxygenases that catalyze the NADPH-dependent oxidation of L-arginine to produce NO and L-citrulline. Over the past five years, the identification and characterization of NOS homologs in cyanobacteria have significantly advanced our understanding of these enzymes. However, the precise mechanisms through which NOS-derived NO influences nitrogen metabolism remain incompletely elucidated.

Rationale: Locked-in syndrome (and its variant, completely locked-in state) generally has a high mortality rate in the acute setting; however, when induced by conditions such as acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, it may well be curable such that an attempt at cure should be systematically sought by clinicians.
Patient Concerns: A 52-year-old man presented with acute tetraparesia and areflexia, initially diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Despite appropriate treatment, his condition deteriorated, evolving into a completely locked-in state.

Purpose: Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 isoform IIIb (FGFR2b) protein overexpression is an emerging biomarker in gastric cancer and gastroesophageal junction cancer (GC). We assessed FGFR2b protein overexpression prevalence in nearly 3,800 tumor samples as part of the prescreening process for a global phase III study in patients with newly diagnosed advanced or metastatic GC.
Methods: As of June 28, 2024, 3,782 tumor samples from prescreened patients from 37 countries for the phase III FORTITUDE-101 trial (ClinicalTrials.

Pollen germination and pollen tube (PT) growth are extremely sensitive to high temperatures. During heat stress (HS), global translation shuts down and favors the maintenance of the essential cellular proteome for cell viability and protection against protein misfolding. Here, we demonstrate that under normal conditions, the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) eukaryotic translation initiation factor subunit eif3m1/eif3m2 double mutant exhibits poor pollen germination, loss of PT integrity and an increased rate of aborted seeds.

Accelerating stomatal kinetics through synthetic optogenetics and mutations that enhance guard cell K+ flux has proven a viable strategy to improve water use efficiency and biomass production. Stomata of the model C4 species Gynandropsis gynandra, a relative of the C3 plant Arabidopsis thaliana, are similarly fast to open and close. We identified and cloned the guard cell rectifying outward K+ channel (GROK) of Gynandropsis and showed that GROK is preferentially expressed in stomatal guard cells.
