Proteins of the SWEET (Sugar Will Eventually be Exported Transporters) family play an important role in plant development, adaptation, and stress response by functioning as transmembrane uniporters of soluble sugars. However, the information on the SWEET family in the plants of the genus, which includes many crop species, is lacking. In this study, we performed a genome-wide analysis of garlic ( L.) and identified 27 genes putatively encoding clade I-IV SWEET proteins. The promoters of the () genes contained hormone- and stress-sensitive elements associated with plant response to phytopathogens. genes had distinct expression patterns in garlic organs. The expression levels and dynamics of clade III , , and genes significantly differed between -resistant and -susceptible garlic cultivars subjected to . infection, suggesting the role of these genes in the garlic defense against the pathogen. Our results provide insights into the role of SWEET sugar uniporters in and may be useful for breeding -resistant cultivars.

Habitual consumption of low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) during juvenile-adolescence can lead to greater sugar intake later in life. Here, we investigated if exposure to the LCS Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K) during this critical period of development reprograms the taste system in a way that would alter hedonic responding for common dietary compounds. Results revealed that early-life LCS intake not only enhanced the avidity for a caloric sugar (fructose) when rats were in a state of caloric need, it increased acceptance of a bitterant (quinine) in Ace-K-exposed rats tested when middle-aged.

Background: Knowledge about the diet quality among youth who follow different types of plant-based diets is essential to understand whether support is required to ensure a well-planned diet that meets their nutritional needs. This study aimed to investigate how food groups, macronutrient intake, and objective blood measures varied between Norwegian youth following different plant-based diets compared to omnivorous diet.
Methods: Cross-sectional design, with healthy 16-to-24-year-olds (n = 165) recruited from the Agder area in Norway, following a vegan, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian or omnivore diet.
