Methods for the enantioselective direct oxygenation of internal alkenes have provided chemists with versatile and powerful toolboxes for the synthesis of optically pure alcohols, one of the most privileged structural motifs. Regioselectivity, however, remains a formidable challenge in the functionalization of internal alkenes. Here we report a palladium-catalysed highly regio- and enantioselective remote 1,n-dioxygenation (n ≥ 4) of internal alkenes with engineered pyridine-oxazoline (Pyox) ligands. The reactions proceed efficiently and exhibit a broad substrate scope with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity, affording optically pure 1,n-diol acetates as the key synthons for important bioactive molecules. Experimental studies and density functional theory calculations provide evidence that the regioselectivity is governed by the reactivity disparity of two allylic C-H bonds, where the oxypalladation is reversible and the first palladium migration step proves to be the regioselectivity-determining step, enabled by the modified phenyl-substituted Pyox ligands.

The femtosecond dynamics of energy transfer from light-excited spirilloxanthin (Spx) to bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a in the reaction centers (RCs) of purple photosynthetic bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum was studied. According to crio-electron microscopy data, Spx is located near accessory BChl a in the B-branch of cofactors. Spx was excited by 25 fs laser pulses at 490 nm, and difference absorption spectra were recorded in the range 500-700 nm.

Polydiacetylenes (PDAs) are conjugated polymers that are well known for their colorimetric transition from blue to red with the application of energetic stimulus. Sensing platforms based on polymerized diacetylene surfactant vesicles and other structures have been widely demonstrated for various colorimetric biosensing applications. Although less studied and utilized, the transition also results in a change from a non-fluorescent to a highly fluorescent state, making polydiacetylenes useful for both colorimetric and fluorogenic sensing applications.

Allylic ethers and alcohols are essential structural motifs commonly present in natural products and pharmaceuticals. Direct allylic C-H oxygenation of internal alkenes is one of the most direct methods, bypassing the necessity for an allylic leaving group that is needed in the traditional Tsuji-Trost reaction. Herein, we develop an efficient and practical method for synthesizing (E)-allyl ethers from readily available internal alkenes and alcohols or phenols via selective allylic C-H oxidation.

Objective: In search of efficient anticancer agents, we aimed at the design and synthesis of a library of tetrasubstituted alkenes. These are structural analogues of tamoxifen, one of the widely used anticancer therapeutics.
Methods: Our small organic compound library was prepared via a chemical synthesis in the solution using the Larock three-component coupling reaction, which is known to tolerate diverse functional groups.
