Neonatal deaths can be categorized in 5 modes along the dimension of intervention and physiology. This classification can be helpful to analyze the choices that can be made in end-of-life care in the NICU. In the Netherlands, neonatal euthanasia became an optional 6th mode of death since publication and legalization of the Groningen Protocol. This paper summarizes the history, legal status and ethical justification of the Groningen Protocol, and describes end-of-life practice in the subsequent years. Since the implementation of the Groningen Protocol, the practice of neonatal euthanasia has almost disappeared. Simultaneously, there has been spectacular growth in neonatal palliative care programs in the Netherlands. Is there still a need for this last-resort option?

Background: Pneumococcal meningitis (PM) triggers apoptotic neuronal and progenitor cell death in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), resulting in subsequent cognitive impairment. Microglia play a crucial role in PM-induced hippocampal damage. While the lasting effects of neonatal nutrition on health are well documented, the influence of early-life overfeeding on the host response to neuroinfections remains uncertain.

Intravenous administration of quinidine and metoprolol for treatment of atrial fibrillation in 2 neonatal foals.

J Vet Intern Med

September 2024

Department of Clinical Studies, New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a rarely reported arrhythmia in otherwise healthy newborn foals, with a single case of cardioversion using procainamide administration described in the literature. Two neonatal Thoroughbred colts were presented to an equine hospital because of an irregularly irregular tachyarrhythmia and poor latching when trying to nurse. History, physical examination, and initial diagnostic testing including ECG and echocardiography confirmed AF without structural heart disease.

Transmission of HIV-1 to newborns and infants remains high, with 130,000 new infections in 2022 in resource-limited settings. Half of HIV-infected newborns, if untreated, progress to disease and death within 2 years. While immunologic immaturity likely promotes pathogenesis and poor viral control, little is known about immune damage in newborns and infants.

Managing a newborn with lethal congenital anomalies is challenging but handling a parent's request for doctors under oath to terminate the baby's life is another major ethical dilemma requiring cautious evaluation. We present a term male neonate who presented on the 7 day of life, with a dark-blue sclera, multiple limb deformities, long bone fractures, beaded ribs, a flattened forehead, a narrow chest, and respiratory distress. A Diagnosis of Type II Osteogenesis imperfecta was made and he was managed by a multidisciplinary team including neonatologists, geneticists/endocrinologists, orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, and medical social workers.

Identifying the immunoglobulin G transporter in equine tissues: A look at the neonatal Fc receptor.

J Equine Vet Sci

August 2024

Department of Animal Sciences, North Dakota State University, PO Box 6050, NDSU Dept 7630 58108-6050, Fargo, ND, USA. Electronic address:

The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) is the receptor responsible for bidirectional transport of immunoglobulin G (IgG) across cells, maintenance of IgG levels in serum, and assisting with antigen presentation. Unfortunately, little is known about FcRn in horses. Therefore, the objective of this study was to provide fundamental information regarding the location of FcRn in equine tissues.
