A simple and sensitive method combining solid-phase extraction (SPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was developed for the determination of benzo[]pyrene (BaP) in fish. Loofah sponge (LS) was carbonized and used as an SPE adsorbent. Carbonization decreased the polarity of LS and enhanced its aromaticity. Carbonized loofah sponge (CLS) could capture BaP better through π-π interaction. The carbonization temperature and the SPE conditions were optimized. The linear range of the developed method was within 10-1000 ng g with a satisfactory correlation coefficient () of 0.9999. The limit of detection (LOD) was 2.0 ng g, which was below the maximum residue limit (5 μg kg) in meat set by the European Union. The method showed good intra-day and inter-day precision with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.4% to 1.7%. Finally, the developed method was applied to the determination of BaP in fish samples. This method is low-cost and environmentally friendly with natural and renewable LS as raw material and it provides an alternative approach for the efficient and simple determination of BaP in aquatic products.

Biochar has been prepared by pyrolysis of (the vegetable sponge produced by ) and activated by mixing the pyrolyzed powder with KOH and pyrolyzed again. Non-activated and activated biochar have both been structurally and then electrochemically characterized to record their differences and assess their suitability as bifunctional oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts in Zn-air batteries. Non activated biochar carries several functional groups; however, the activation procedure led to a material with mainly O and Mg groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Continuous cropping in greenhouses can lead to pest and disease issues that harm crop quality and yield, making crop rotation a key strategy for improvement.
  • A study comparing Chinese cabbage growth after rotating with ginger and sponge gourd found that cabbage thrived after ginger but struggled after sponge gourd, prompting an analysis of soil properties and microbial communities.
  • The research revealed that ginger rotation improved soil quality, highlighted distinct microbial community structures despite similar diversity levels, and identified key microbial indicators that may influence crop health through secondary metabolites.

Against the backdrop of the Ministry of Education's promotion of new agricultural science construction and interdisciplinary integration, a comprehensive chemistry experiment to enhance the practical skills of students in preparing biomass functional materials and detecting pesticide residues was designed. Natural loofah was utilized as a precursor in synthesizing nitrogen-doped magnetic porous carbon materials, which were then applied in a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique. Subsequently, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to analyze and detect the phenylurea herbicide monuron in tea.
