Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in pregnant and peripartal women in western countries. Physiological changes during pregnancy can lead to cardiovascular complications in the mother; women with pre-existing heart disease may not tolerate these changes well, increasing their susceptibility to adverse cardiovascular outcomes during pregnancy. The aim of this study is to characterize pregnancy-induced changes in cardiac function, biomarker concentrations and cardiovascular outcomes in women with CVD during pregnancy at a tertiary care hospital in Germany.

The lightweight design of steel pistons for diesel engines based on thermo-mechanical characteristics.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Yunnan Key Laboratory of Plateau Emission of Internal Combustion Engines, Kunming Yunnei Power CO., LTD., Kunming City, 650200, People's Republic of China.

Traditional aluminum-silicon alloy pistons are gradually replaced by steel pistons, which has become the trend of future diesel engine development. However, the efficient design and broad application of steel pistons are limited by the higher density of steel. For this reason, a new lightweight design method for steel pistons in diesel engines was proposed in this paper.

Toward a functional future for the cognitive neuroscience of human aging.

Neuron

The cognitive neuroscience of human aging seeks to identify neural mechanisms behind the commonalities and individual differences in age-related behavioral changes. This goal has been pursued predominantly through structural or "task-free" resting-state functional neuroimaging. The former has elucidated the material foundations of behavioral decline, and the latter has provided key insight into how functional brain networks change with age.

Background: The mental health crisis among college students intensified amid the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting an urgent need for innovative solutions to support them. Previous efforts to address mental health concerns have been constrained, often due to the underuse or shortage of services. Mobile health (mHealth) technology holds significant potential for providing resilience-building support and enhancing access to mental health care.

Background And Hypothesis: For the rapidly growing population of older people living with schizophrenia (PLWS), psychological resilience, or the capacity to adapt to adversity, is an understudied target for improving health. Little is known about resilience and its longitudinal impact on outcomes among PLWS. This study assesses trajectories of resilience-related traits in PLWS and a nonpsychiatric comparison group (NCs) and longitudinal interactions between resilience and health.
