AI Article Synopsis

  • - The study focuses on sporulating bacteria that are linked to severe hospital-acquired infections, specifically assessing multidrug-resistant strains from Ghanaian hospitals.
  • - Researchers analyzed the bacteria's antimicrobial resistance profiles using disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods, finding a high level of resistance (70-100%) to multiple antibiotic classes.
  • - The study also investigated sporulation markers, using PCR techniques to identify their expression patterns, revealing a connection between these markers and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.

Article Abstract

Sporulating bacteria such as spp. have contributed to severity of opportunistic hospital acquired infections, including postoperative wounds and respiratory tract infections. This study determines the expression profiles of sporulation markers in multidrug-resistant spp. isolated from Ghanaian hospital environments. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of the bacteria were determined with disk diffusion and broth microdilution. Primer-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was used to profile the sporulation markers, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used for the expression of the sporulation markers at different antibiotic concentrations. The strains are multidrug resistant (70-100%) to at least two of the eight classes of the antibiotics tested including cephalosporins, penicillin, aminoglycosides, and glycopeptide. The strains showed different resistance patterns to all the tested antibiotics, which might indicate diverse resistance mechanisms. Common (, , and ) and not commonly (, , , and ) reported sporulation markers were detected in the strains. The study showed an association of the sporulation markers with AMR as indicated by their expression profiles.

Impaired intestinal integrity in broilers reduces performance and health, highlighting the importance of accurately measuring intestinal permeability (IP) to maintain gut health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of iohexol as an IP marker in broilers challenged with , , or both during both peak challenge (day [d] 21) and recovery (d 28) periods. One-day-old male Ross 708 birds (n = 56) were distributed into 4 treatment groups: NC (no-challenge control); EM (challenged with 5,000 .

is the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea in industrialized countries. Many questions remain to be answered about the mechanisms governing its interaction with the host during infection. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) contribute to shape virulence in many pathogens and modulate host responses; however, their role in infection (CDI) has not been explored.
