Anthocyanins in metabolites of purple corn.

Published: April 2023

Purple corn ( L.) is a special variety of corn, rich in a large amount of anthocyanins and other functional phytochemicals, and has always ranked high in the economic benefits of the corn industry. However, most studies on the stability of agronomic traits and the interaction between genotype and environment in cereal crops focus on yield. In order to further study the accumulation and stability of special anthocyanins in the growth process of purple corn, this review starts with the elucidation of anthocyanins in purple corn, the biosynthesis process and the gene regulation mechanism behind them, points out the influence of anthocyanin metabolism on anthocyanin metabolism, and introduces the influence of environmental factors on anthocyanin accumulation in detail, so as to promote the multi-field production of purple corn, encourage the development of color corn industry and provide new opportunities for corn breeders and growers.

Ammonia (NH) volatilization caused by urea application has negative implications for human health, environmental quality, and the value of nitrogen fertilizers. It remains to be investigated how management strategies should be adopted to not only reduce NH volatilization but also improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the agriculture industry at present. Hence, a two-year field trial, including subplots, was conducted to simultaneously evaluate the effects of mulching treatments (NM: non-mulching; SM: straw mulching) and different fertilizer treatments (U: urea; U + NBPT: urea plus 1% N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide; U + CRU: the mixture of urea and controlled-release urea at a 3:7 ratio; U + OF: urea plus commercial organic fertilizer at a 3:7 ratio) on NH volatilization, crop production, and NUE in an oilseed rape-maize rotation system in the sloping farmland of purple soil in southwestern China between 2021 and 2023.

Paramutation, a specific epigenetic phenomenon first identified in by Alexander Brink in the 1950s, has since been observed in different plant and animal species. What sets paramutation apart from other gene silencing processes is its ability for one silenced allele (referred to as paramutagenic) to silence another allele (paramutable) in trans. The resultant silenced allele (paramutated) remains stable across generations, even after separating from the paramutagenic allele, and acquires paramutagenic properties itself.

Article Synopsis
  • Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) application in terrestrial ecosystems has significantly influenced soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics, with a 12-year field trial conducted in a maize agro-ecosystem revealing mixed effects on various carbon pools.
  • The study found that N application increased particulate organic carbon (POC) by 43.1%-54.0% and SOC by 6.56%-10.4%, while decreasing mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) by 7.31%-17.1%, alongside reductions in soil pH and base ions.
  • Findings suggest that increased root biomass due to N leads to enhanced POC, whereas soil acidification negatively affects MAOC by diminishing microbial residue inputs and mineral protection, highlighting the

Article Synopsis
  • * From hybrid maize fields with pH 5.50, researchers identified 61 K-PNSB isolates, which could dissolve between 56.2 and 98.6 mg/L of potassium, with three promising isolates (M-Sl-09, M-So-11, M-So-14) showing specific potassium dissolution ranges of 48.1-49.7 mg/L.
  • * Along with potassium solubilization, these three isolates also showed the ability to fix nitrogen, solubilize calcium-phosphate,
