When human serum must be stored for extended periods before analysis, conditions must be such that samples give results comparable with those for "fresh" (unstored) samples. In a balanced experiment with statistically pre-determined sample size, we assessed, at three-weekly intervals for 18 weeks, the stability of total cholesterol, high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides in human serum stored at -15 degrees C. No significant changes were observed.

Peatlands are significant global carbon sinks; however, their carbon storage functions are vulnerable to human activities. In the Greater Khingan Mountains of Northeast China, where forest and peatland ecosystems are interspersed extensively, prescribed burning is conducted annually on peatlands to prevent major forest fires. To investigate the effect of prescribed burning on carbon and nutrient cycling processes in peatlands, we conducted a three-year experiment in the Greater Khingan Mountains.

Introduction: Schistosomiasis has for many years relied on a single drug, praziquantel (PZQ) for treatment of the disease. Immense efforts have been invested in the discovery of protein kinase (PK) inhibitors; however, given that the majority of PKs are still not targeted by an inhibitor with a useful level of selectivity, there is a compelling need to expand the chemical space available for synthesizing new, potent, and selective PK inhibitors. Small-molecule inhibitors targeting the ATP pocket of the catalytic domain of PKs have the potential to become drugs devoid of (major) side effects, particularly if they bind selectively.
