TIR (Toll/interlukin-1 receptor) domains are found in archaea, bacteria and eukaryotes, featured in proteins generally associated with immune functions. In plants, they are found in a large group of NLRs (nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors), NLR-like proteins and TIR-only proteins. They are also present in effector proteins from phytopathogenic bacteria that are associated with suppression of host immunity. TIR domains from plants and bacteria are enzymes that cleave NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, oxidized form) and other nucleotides. In dicot plants, TIR-derived signalling molecules activate downstream immune signalling proteins, the EDS1 (enhanced disease susceptibility 1) family proteins, and in turn helper NLRs. Recent work has brought major advances in understanding how TIR domains work, how they produce signalling molecules and how these products signal.

The mungbean yellow mosaic India virus (MYMIV, Begomovirus vignaradiataindiaense) causes Yellow Mosaic Disease (YMD) in mungbean (Vigna radiata L.). The biochemical assays including total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), ascorbic acid (AA), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) were used to study the mungbean plants defense response to MYMIV infection.

Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) plays a crucial role in the immune response through recognizing bacterial flagellin. Some teleosts possess two forms of TLR5, including a canonical membrane TLR5 (TLR5M) ortholog and a piscine soluble TLR5 (TLR5S). In the past decades, cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels (CNGCs) have been extensively studied in diploid species Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the functional diversification of CNGCs in crop plants, mostly polyploid, remains poorly understood. In allotetraploid Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), GhCNGC31 is one of the multiple orthologs of AtCNGC2, being present in the plasma membrane, capable of interacting with itself and binding to calmodulins and cyclic nucleotides.

Bacteria carry numerous anti-phage systems in "defense islands" or hotspots. Recent studies have delineated the content and boundaries of these islands in various species, revealing instances of islands that encode additional factors, including antibiotic resistance genes, stress genes, type VI secretion system (T6SS)-dependent effectors, and virulence factors. Our study identifies three defense islands in the Serratia genus with a mixed cargo of anti-phage systems, virulence factors, and different types of anti-bacterial modules, revealing a widespread trend of co-accumulation that extends beyond T6SS-dependent effectors to colicins and contact-dependent inhibition systems.
