Ocular cystinosis is a disease in which accumulated cystine crystals cause damage to the eyes, necessitating timely treatment and ongoing monitoring of cystine levels. The current treatment involves frequent administration of cysteamine eye drops, which suffer from low bioavailability and can lead to drug toxicity, making it essential to prescribe an appropriate dosage based on the patient's condition. Additionally, cystine crystal levels are typically assessed subjectively via slit-lamp examination, requiring frequent clinical visits and causing discomfort for the patient.

Due to its unique physiological structure and functions, the eye has received considerable attention in the field of adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy. Inherited retinal degenerative diseases, which arise from pathogenic mutations in mRNA transcripts expressed in the eye's photoreceptor cells or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), are the most common cause of vision loss. However, current retinal gene therapy mostly involves subretinal injection of therapeutic genes, which treats a limited area, entails retinal detachment, and requires sophisticated techniques.

Purpose: To demonstrate the association between neighborhood quality, using the Child Opportunity Index (COI), and the visual outcomes in children with unilateral pediatric cataract.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients ≤18 years of age who presented at Boston Children's Hospital between 2000 and 2022 with unilateral cataracts and underwent cataract extraction. The collected data included patient demographics, residential addresses, the reason for the initial presentation, the age at presentation, the morphology of the cataract, and the final visual acuity.
