Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) attract much attention owing to their high safety, environmentally friendliness and low cost. However, the unsatisfactory performance of cathode materials is one of the unsolved important factors for their widespread application. Herein, we report NH V O nanorods with Mg ion preinsertion (Mg-NHVO) as a high-performance cathode material for AZIBs. The preinserted Mg ions effectively improve the reaction kinetics and structural stability of NH V O (NHVO), which are confirmed by electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculations. Compared with pristine NHVO, the intrinsic conductivity of Mg-NHVO is improved by 5 times based on the test results of a single nanorod device. Besides, Mg-NHVO could maintain a high specific capacity of 152.3 mAh g after 6000 cycles at the current density of 5 A g , which is larger than that of NHVO (only exhibits a low specific capacity of 30.5 mAh g at the same condition). Moreover, the two-phase crystal structure evolution process of Mg-NHVO in AZIBs is revealed. This work provides a simple and efficient method to improve the electrochemical performance of ammonium vanadates and enhances the understanding about the reaction mechanism of layered vanadium-based materials in AZIBs.

Chirality epitomizes the sophistication of chemistry, representing some of its most remarkable achievements. Yet, the precise synthesis of chiral structures from achiral building blocks remains a profound and enduring challenge in synthetic chemistry and materials science. Here, we demonstrate that achiral colloidal nanocrystals, including Au and Ag nanocrystals, can assemble into long-range-ordered helical assemblies with the assistance of chiral molecules.

LiCoO2 batteries for 3C electronics demand high charging voltage and wide operating temperature range, which are virtually impossible for existing electrolytes due to aggravated interfacial parasitic reactions and sluggish kinetics. Herein, we report an electrolyte design strategy based on a partially fluorinated ester solvent (i.e.

Unveiling the key influencing factors towards electrode/electrolyte interface control is a long-standing challenge for a better understanding of microscopic electrode kinetics, which is indispensable to building up guiding principles for designer electrocatalysts with desirable functionality. Herein, we exemplify the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via water molecule oxidation with the iridium dioxide electrocatalyst and uncovered the significant mismatching effect of pH between local electrode surface and bulk electrolyte: the intrinsic OER activity under acidic or near-neutral condition was deciphered to be identical by adjusting this pH mismatching. This result indicates that the local pH effect at the electrified solid-liquid interface plays the main role in the "fake" OER performance.

Guarding Drinking Water Safety against Harmful Algal Blooms: Could UV/Cl Treatment Be the Answer?

Frequent and severe occurrences of harmful algal blooms increasingly threaten human health by the release of microcystins (MCs). Urgent attention is directed toward managing MCs, as evidenced by rising HAB-related do not drink/do not boil advisories due to unsafe MC levels in drinking water. UV/chlorine treatment, in which UV light is applied simultaneously with chlorine, showed early promise for effectively degrading MC-LR to values below the World Health Organization's guideline limits.

Fungal highly reducing polyketide synthases (hrPKSs) are remarkable multidomain enzymes that catalyse the biosynthesis of a diverse range of structurally complex compounds. During biosynthesis, the ketosynthase (KS) and acyltransferase (AT) domains of the condensing region are visited by the acyl carrier protein (ACP) domain during every cycle, catalysing chain priming and elongation reactions. Despite their significance, our comprehension of how these steps contribute to biosynthetic fidelity remains poorly understood.
