The emergence of a power-law distribution for the energy released during an earthquake is investigated in several models. Generic features are identified which are based on the self-affine behavior of the stress field prior to an event. This field behaves at large scale as a random trajectory in one dimension of space and a random surface in two dimensions. Using concepts of statistical mechanics and results on the properties of these random objects, several predictions are obtained and verified, in particular the value of the power-law exponent of the earthquake energy distribution (the Gutenberg-Richter law) as well as a mechanism for the existence of aftershocks after a large earthquake (the Omori law).

The deterioration of concrete structures is mainly due to the combined action of the environment and external load. In this study, 32 reinforced concrete columns were prepared to evaluate the coupling actions on the properties of reinforced concrete structures. The durability, bearing capacity, and failure mode of reinforced concrete columns were investigated under the combined action of freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles, sustained load, and salt corrosion (water or composite salt solution).

: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition worldwide. The limited effectiveness of current psychological and pharmacological treatments has motivated studies on meditation techniques. This study is a comprehensive, multiple-treatments meta-analysis comparing the effectiveness of different categories of meditation in treating PTSD.

This report presents the follow-up treatment course of a previously published case that demonstrated the effectiveness of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for a disaster relief worker. The patient, a municipal employee in Fukushima Prefecture, developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mood disorders after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent disasters. This follow-up focuses on the period from 2021 to early 2024, during which the patient experienced symptom recurrence after his father's death.

We investigate multimodal seismicity by analyzing it as the result of multiple seismic sources. We examine three case studies: the Redoubt and Spurr regions in Alaska, where volcanic and subduction-related seismicity occur, and the Kii Peninsula in Japan, where shallow and deep earthquakes are clearly separated. To understand this phenomenon, we perform spatial, temporal, and magnitude analyses.
