Feasibility and complications of videocapsule endoscopy in dogs weighing 7 kg or less.

J Vet Intern Med

January 2025

Department of Clinical Studies, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) is a valuable tool for investigating gastrointestinal (GI) diseases in dogs. Its use is not recommended in dogs ≤4.3 kg, because of risks of GI endoscopic capsule (EC) retention and bowel obstruction.

Aim: To report on the management of a toddler who had accidental ingestion of an unknown amount of paraquat, with treatment including continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), steroids and antifibrinolytics at a tertiary-level health system.

Methods: A 16-month-old child weighing 10 kg accidentally ingested an unknown amount of Gramoxone containing paraquat. The child was transferred to a tertiary centre Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) where she was electively intubated and commenced on CRRT at 7 hours and 15 minutes post-ingestion.

Background: Preclinical studies have documented the role of alpha-adrenergic agonists in myometrial contraction. Phenylephrine is frequently used to prevent and treat post-spinal hypotension during cesarean delivery. We hypothesized phenylephrine would reduce postpartum blood loss due to alpha-1 receptor-mediated uterine and vascular smooth muscle contraction.

Cost-Effectiveness of Semaglutide in Patients With Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease.

Can J Cardiol

January 2025

Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Department of Medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; O'Brien Institute for Public Health, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Department of Cardiac Sciences, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Randomized clinical trials have shown that semaglutide is associated with a clinically relevant reduction in body weight and a lower risk of adverse cardiovascular events in those who are overweight or obese with a history of cardiovascular disease but no diabetes. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of semaglutide for this indication.

Methods: A decision analytic Markov model was used to compare the lifetime benefits and costs of semaglutide 2.

Characterisation at Cryogenic Temperatures of an Attenuator for an Application of Astrophysical Instrumentation with MKIDs.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Laboratorio de Circuitos Integrados (LABIC), Departamento de Electrónica, Área de Instrumentación, Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), 38205 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.

The use of non-cryogenic certified commercial electronics for cryogenic applications may be attractive due to their cost and availability, but it also carries risks related to reliability, performance and thermal compatibility. The decision to use commercial components that are not certified for cryogenics instead of components specifically designed for such applications must be carefully weighed based on specific project needs and risk tolerances. This work presents the characterisation of an attenuator circuit at cryogenic temperatures used in a microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) readout system.
