Design of economical, large-scale, stable, and highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries with enhanced oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution performance is needed. Herein, a series of electrocatalysts were facilely fabricated where formed bimetallic nanoparticles aided in the growth of carbon nanotubes over carbon nanofibers (MM'-CNT@CNF) during thermal treatment. Different combinations of Fe, Ni, Co and Mn metals and melamine as precursor for CNT growth were investigated. The synergistic interaction between bimetallic nanoparticles and N-doped carbon results in greatly improved bifunctional catalytic activity for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR, OER) using FeNi-CNT@CNF as catalyst. The half-wave potential (0.80 V RHE) for FeNi-CNT@CNF for ORR was close to that of Pt/C (0.79 V RHE), meanwhile its stability was superior to Pt/C. Likewise, during OER, the FeNi-CNT@CNF reached a current density of 10 mA cm at a rather low overpotential of 310 mV RHE compared to benchmark RuO (410 mV). The rechargeable Zn-air prototype battery using FeNi-CNT@CNF as an air electrode outperformed the mixture of Pt/C and RuO with discharge/charge overpotential of 0.61 V, power density of 118 mW cm at 10 mA cm and an improved cycling stability over 108 hours.

Dual single-atom catalysts have attracted considerable research interest due to their higher metal atom loading and more flexible active sites compared to single-atom catalysts (SACs). We pioneered the one-step synthesis of sheets copper-cobalt graphitic carbon nitride dual single-atom (S-Cu/Co-g-C3N4) using folding fan-shaped aluminum foil as a template, and used them as catalysts in the epoxidation of styrene respectively. Through XAFS(X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) and other characterizations, it is found that Cu and Co single atoms are stabilized separately on g-C3N4 via coordination with nitrogen (N), hindered the ordered growth of sheets, and formed more pore structures, which not only increased more catalytically active sites, but also effectively prevented the flakes re-aggregate during the catalytic process.

Aqueous zinc-carbon capacitors display application potential in green power and high-end equipment owing to their high security, large power and sustainability. The water-rich zinc anode-electrolyte interface (AEI) and disordered zinc-ion diffusion are the culprits triggering corrosion reactions and dendrite growth, threatening the sustainability of aqueous zinc-carbon capacitors. Herein, a polyfunctional biomolecular, vitamin B6, is introduced into the traditional aqueous electrolyte for customizing the functional AEI and fine-regulating the interfacial coordination environment of zinc ions.

Zn-Mn aqueous batteries (ZMABs) are widely recognized as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to their cost-effectiveness, high safety and environmental friendliness. However, the practical application of ZMABs is hindered by inherent electrical contact loss, hydrogen evolution and dendrite growth on traditional anodes. Here, a three-tiered golf anode with high conductivity is developed to simultaneously enhance the reversibility of Zn and Mn metals.

Metal cluster fullerenes are a class of molecular nanomaterials with complex structures and novel properties. An in-depth study of their formation mechanism is a key topic for developing new high-yield synthesis methods and promoting the practical application of such molecular nanomaterials. To elucidate the formation mechanism of ScN@C, a representative sub-class of metal cluster fullerenes, this study developed a ReaxFF force field parameter set CNSc.

Owing to the adverse consequences of excess glucose (Glu) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) on humans, it is imperative to develop an electrochemical sensor for detection of these analytes with good selectivity and sensitivity. Herein, a nanohybrid comprising nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCoO NPs) embedded on conductive TiCT nanosheets (NSs) has been prudently designed and employed for the electrochemical detection of Glu and HO. The developed nanohybrid has been systematically characterized using morphological and spectral techniques, and then immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).
