The concentrations, distribution, and risk of seven potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn, in seawater and sediment from the eastern Beibu Gulf of China were studied using national standard methods. Results showed that the concentrations of PTEs in seawater exhibited significant spatial and seasonal variations, resulting in tolerable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks for both adults and children. The sediment concentrations of PTEs were generally lower than historical values, indicating an acceptable pollution level and ecological risk, except for Hg. Granularity was found to be an important factor in regulating the distribution. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model simulation revealed that the sources of PTEs in sediment were primarily of natural origin, with the exception of Hg, which was predominantly of anthropogenic origin. The parent rock of As was different from that of other PTEs.

Bivalve are exposed to a wide range of contaminants, some of which may be toxic to human health. The aim of this study was to detect essential and non-essential elements such as Na, Ca, Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Be and Co in water, sediments, and and from Faro Lake. It is a lake of marine origin located on the northern coast of Messina (Sicily), where shellfish farming has been practiced for many years.

Introduction: Aluminum phosphide is a cheap and commonly used rodenticide that is also an effective solid fumigant and frequently used for grain preservation. The pill contains around 44% inert elements (ammonium carbonate) to avoid disintegration of the tablet, while the rest (about 56%) is aluminum phosphide. Because it is freely available on the market, it is one of the commonly used agents for self-poisoning in different parts of the developing world.

Seabirds are particularly susceptible to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) due to the tendency of biomagnification of some elements, thus serving as potential bioindicators for assessing environmental health. In this study, we analyzed As, Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in liver samples from nine seabird species (51 specimens) collected along the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Results revealed substantial variations in PTE concentrations among species, with taxonomic orders influencing accumulation patterns.

Studies of in situ plant response and adaptation to complex environmental stresses, are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of formation and functioning of ecosystems of anthropogenically transformed habitats. We study short- and long-term responses of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) and anti-oxidant capacity to complex abiotic stresses of common plants Calamagrostis epigejos and Solidago gigantea in semi-natural (C) and heavy metal contaminated habitats (LZ). We found significant differences in leaf pigment content between both plant species growing on LZ plots and their respective C populations.
