Study Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: To evaluate whether using antibiotic-impregnated bone graft (AIBG) enhances infection control and shortens the postoperative course of pyogenic discitis and vertebral osteomyelitis (PDVO).

Overview Of Literature: Surgical treatment of PDVO is indicated for neurological deficit, instability, unknown pathogen, or poorly controlled infection.

Anterior cord syndrome is a rare yet critical neurological condition that poses significant challenges in clinical management. We present the case of a 71-year-old male with a medical history of hypertension, uncontrolled type II diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis who presented to the emergency department with complaints of chills, back pain, abdominal pain, and vomiting episodes. Based on the severity of the patient's illness, it was decided that inpatient admission would be best.

Article Synopsis
  • A case of spondylodiscitis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus was successfully treated with isavuconazole after the patient showed severe intolerance to the standard treatment, voriconazole.
  • Isavuconazole is a newer antifungal that has been shown to be just as effective as voriconazole for invasive aspergillosis, with fewer side effects and no need for serum level monitoring.
  • While current research on isavuconazole specifically for spondylodiscitis is limited, this case adds to the evidence supporting its use in treating this serious condition.

Background: Thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) and tuberculous infective spondylodiscitis rarely combine to cause paraplegia. Here, a 48-year-old female with both thoracic OLF and tuberculous spondylodiscitis experienced the acute onset of paraplegia successfully managed with a T8-L1 laminectomy with fusion.

Case Description: A 48-year-old female presented with the acute onset of paraplegia attributed to magnetic resonance-documented thoracic OLF and infective spondylodiscitis.

Background: Pyogenic spondylitis or intervertebral discitis rarely spreads into the thoracic cavity, resulting in pyothorax. Moreover, no study has reported methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a cause. Conservative and surgical treatments are reportedly effective for the above-mentioned situations; however, there have been no comprehensive reports owing to the disease's rarity.
