Serial macromolecular crystallography has become a powerful method to reveal room temperature structures of biological macromolecules and perform time-resolved studies. ID29, a flagship beamline of the ESRF 4th generation synchrotron, is the first synchrotron beamline in the world capable of delivering high brilliance microsecond X-ray pulses at high repetition rate for the structure determination of biological macromolecules at room temperature. The cardinal combination of microsecond exposure times, innovative beam characteristics and adaptable sample environment provides high quality complete data, even from an exceptionally small amount of crystalline material, enabling what we collectively term serial microsecond crystallography (SµX).

Dynamic structural biology enables studying biological events at the atomic scale from 10's of femtoseconds to a few seconds duration. With the advent of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) and 4th generation synchrotrons, serial crystallography is becoming a major player for time-resolved experiments in structural biology. Despite significant progress, challenges such as obtaining sufficient amounts of protein to produce homogeneous microcrystal slurry, remain.

The impact of drug delivery and particulate matter exposure on the human respiratory tract is influenced by various anatomical and physiological factors, particularly the structure of the respiratory tract and its fluid dynamics. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate airflow in two 3D models of the human air conducting zone. The first model uses a combination of CT-scan images and geometrical data from human cadaver to extract the upper and central airways down to the ninth generation, while the second model develops the lung airways from the first Carina to the end of the ninth generation using Kitaoka's deterministic algorithm.

Early experience with a 3-D printed porous surface, fixed-bearing, total ankle arthroplasty: A minimum of 2-year follow-up.

Foot Ankle Surg

July 2024

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga, 975 East Third Street, Hospital Box 260, Chattanooga, TN 37403, USA.

Background: This is a pilot study reviewing patients undergoing ankle replacement with the 3-D printed INFINITY™ with ADAPTIS™ total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) system.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of patients with a minimum two-year follow-up who underwent TAA with the INFINITY™ with ADAPTIS™ implant system. Outcome measures include implant survivorship, complications with subsequent reoperations, patient reported outcomes, and radiologic subsidence or radiolucency.
