Background: This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of sitagliptin versus gliclazide, combined with metformin, in treatment-naive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and glucotoxicity.

Methods: In this single-center, randomized, controlled noninferiority trial, 129 treatment-naive patients with T2DM with glucotoxicity (fasting plasma glucose [FPG] ≥ 200 mg/dL and glycated hemoglobin ≥ 9.0%) were randomized to receive sitagliptin plus metformin (n = 66) or gliclazide plus metformin (n = 63) for 12 weeks.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a commonly used chemotherapeutic medication for treating malignancies, although its cardiotoxicity limits its use. There is growing evidence that alteration of the mitochondrial fission/fusion dynamic processes accompanied by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and alteration of calcium Ca homeostasis are potential underlying mechanisms of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC). Metformin (Met) is an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activator that has antioxidant properties and cardioprotective effects.

Insulin signaling and oxidative stress: Bridging the gap between type 2 diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's disease.

J Alzheimers Dis

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Basic Pharmacology of Ministry of Education and Joint International Research Laboratory of Ethnomedicine of Ministry of Education, Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi, China.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two prevalent chronic diseases that pose significant global health challenges. Increasing evidence suggests a complex bidirectional relationship between these conditions, where T2D elevates the risk of AD, and AD exacerbates glucose metabolism abnormalities in T2D.

Objective: This review explores the molecular mechanisms linking T2D and AD, focusing on the role of insulin signaling pathways and oxidative stress.

Bariatric surgery and HIV: Joint venture between family, primary care, and HIV physicians.

J Family Med Prim Care

December 2024

Department of HIV and Blood Borne Viruses, Milton Keynes University Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, Milton Keynes, UK.

We report a case of a 49-year-old female with a history of HIV infection for 12 years. The patient had excellent compliance with antiretroviral medications, raltegravir 400 mg twice daily and truvada once daily for HIV. Over the years, she maintained an undetectable viral load with a CD4+ count >200 cells/μL.

This study is aimed at evaluating the neurotoxic effects of chronic exposure of sodium fluoride (NaF) in developmental stages in rat using prenatal models. NaF (100 ppm, orally) dosing via drinking water was given to pregnant rats in disease group. In the treatment groups, Metformin & Dehydrozingerone (DHZ) (200 mg/kg) were administered orally along with NaF, and the dosing was continued throughout the gestation and lactation periods to the pups until the end of experiment.
