This study's aim was to evaluate the genetic diversity of European plum () cultivars and hybrids in Lithuania using SSR markers. In total, 107 plum genotypes (including 68 European plum cultivars and 39 hybrids) from the genetic resources collection of the Institute of Horticulture of the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LRCAF IH) were evaluated using nine microsatellite markers (SSRs) previously published and suggested by the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR). Up to six alleles per locus with each primer pair were generated for some genotypes due to the hexaploidy of plums. The number of alleles in each primer ranged from 18 to 30, with an average of 24.33. The highest number of alleles was generated with the PacA33 primer pair (30). The most informative primer, according to the PIC value, was BPPCT007. Sixty-two unique alleles (representing 39.5% of all polymorphic alleles) have been detected in the plum germplasm developed in Lithuania. According to UPGMA cluster analysis, 58 European plum genotypes were separated into eight groups without any relation to fruit color or shape. By genetic diversity (UPGMA) and structure (Bayesian) analysis, European plum hybrids were grouped into clusters according to their pedigree.

Pest categorisation of .

EFSA J

January 2025

Following the commodity risk assessment of plants grafted on from China, in which (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) was identified as a pest of possible concern, the European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to conduct a pest categorisation of for the territory of the European Union (EU). The origin of the scale insect is uncertain, with either South America or eastern Asia suggested as the native range. The geographic distribution of the species includes many countries of the continents of Africa, North and South America, Asia and Oceania.

Plant viruses have evolved different viral suppressors of RNA silencing (VSRs) to counteract RNA silencing which is a small RNA-mediated sequence-specific RNA degradation mechanism. Previous studies have already shown that the coat protein (CP) of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) reduced RNA silencing suppression (RSS) activity of the VSR of CMV, the 2b protein. To demonstrate the universality of this CP-VSR interference, our study included three different viruses: CMV and peanut stunt virus (PSV) from the Bromoviridae, and plum pox virus (PPV) from the Potyviridae family.

Article Synopsis
  • Six macroporous resins were tested for their ability to adsorb and desorb neochlorogenic acid-enriched polyphenols from European plums, with the X-5 resin showing the highest effectiveness in adsorption (99.62%) and desorption (44.80%).
  • The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model and was categorized as spontaneous and exothermic based on the Freundlich model, with a 60% ethanol solution efficiently eluting the compound from the resin.
  • NAPEP, containing 21 polyphenol compounds mainly consisting of chlorogenic acids, demonstrated significant antioxidant properties and induced apoptosis in A549 cancer cells by activating the AKT pathway, suggesting its potential as a functional food ingredient.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of drying process preparations, solvent type, and different species of spp. (European, Japanese, and cherry plums) on bioactive properties (antioxidant, anti-lipid peroxidation, anti-tyrosinase, and anti-inflammatory activities) and rutin content. Leaves and fresh fruits of plums were dried using a cold process (vacuum freeze dryer at -105 ± 5°C) and a hot process (hot air oven at 50 ± 0.

Unlabelled: Understanding the genetic diversity of crops is of fundamental importance for the efficient use and improvement of germplasm resources. Different molecular genotyping systems have been implemented for population structure and phylogenetic relationships analyses, among which, microsatellites (SSRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) markers have been the most widely used. This study reports the efficacy of SNPs detected via double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) and SSRs analyzed via capillary electrophoresis (CE) and high-resolution melting (HRM) in tomato.
