Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) is one of the best thermal insulation materials available, but its flammability makes it a potential fire hazard. Due to its porous nature, the large specific surface area is the key factor for easy ignition and rapid fires spread when exposed to heat sources. The burning process of RPUF mainly takes place on the surface. Therefore, if a flame-retardant coating can be formed on the surface of RPUF, it can effectively reduce or stop the flame propagation on the surface of RPUF, further improving the fire safety. Compared with the bulk flame retardant of RPUF, the flame-retardant coating on its surface has a higher efficiency in improving fire safety. This paper aims to review the preparations, properties, and working mechanisms of RPUF surface flame-retardant systems. Flame-retardant coatings are divided into non-intumescent flame-retardant coatings (NIFRCs) and intumescent flame-retardant coatings (IFRCs), depending on whether the flame-retardant coating expands when heated. After discussion, the development trends for surface flame-retardant systems are considered to be high-performance, biological, biomimetic, multifunctional flame-retardant coatings.

The development of cellulose fabrics with good flame retardancy and durability has been a primary concern for in firefighting clothing. A recyclable ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES) was used to prepare surface ammonium phosphate-modified cellulose fabrics (SACF). The incorporation of ammonium phosphate groups notably enhanced the durable flame retardancy of cellulose fabrics.

In Canada studies on the presence of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides and flame retardants in lakes have primarily focused on the water column at localized scales. To address this gap, the occurrence of 44 TrOCs, representative of various types of human activities, was investigated in surface sediments (0-2 cm) from 193 lakes across Canada. A total of 28 targeted TrOCs were detected, with 99.

Hundreds of new flame retardants (NFRs) are widely used, causing environmental pollution and threating human health. In this study, based on the interaction of NFRs and human serum albumin (HSA), we assessed the differences in potential human accumulation of 8 NFRs including 1,2-Dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH), tetrabromobisphenol A bis(dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-DBPE), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP), pentabromophenol (PBP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), triphenyl phosphate (TPP), Tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and Tri(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCP). All NFRs could bind to HSA and cause slight damage to its structure, suggesting their potential human accumulation ability.

In this work, the coprecipitation approach was successfully used to create Mg-Al hydrotalcite-like inhibitors modified with varying amounts of Zn, and their characteristics were assessed. The findings indicate that the flame retardancy of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (MgAl-LDHs) is not significantly affected by Zn content. By adding MgAl-LDHs, the temperature at which the exothermic reaction started to occur was raised from 146.

The first comprehensive analysis of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs), including 209 full congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 26 organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), 41 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and four other brominated flame retardants (BFRs), was performed on surface mangrove sediments from Bintan Island, Province of the Riau Archipelago, Indonesia. Among the measured HOC contaminants, the mean concentration of ∑PCBs (2.3 ± 0.
