We have described a patient who as a child sustained a Monteggia's fracture that was neither diagnosed nor treated. Neurologic deficit and limitation of motion were clinically apparent. A high index of suspicion, careful examination of the patient, and high-quality roentgenograms should enable accurate diagnosis of this and similar lesions in less obvious cases, thus avoiding the complications of missed diagnosis.

An observational study of the causes of an isolated elevated alkaline phosphatase level of unclear etiology.

Article Synopsis
  • Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is frequently tested in patients, but it lacks specific diagnostic value since it can originate from multiple tissues; this study explores causes of isolated elevated ALP levels without a clear reason.
  • A retrospective study at the Medical University of South Carolina looked at 260 adults with unexplained elevated ALP results and found that 57% of cases were linked to underlying malignancies, particularly related to the liver and bones.
  • The study highlights the importance of recognizing an isolated elevated ALP as potentially indicative of serious conditions, especially metastatic cancer, rather than just primary liver issues.

Unsuspected Isolated Peritoneal Metastasis of Prostate Cancer Detected with Digital F-18 PSMA PET/CT Scan.

Nucl Med Mol Imaging

October 2024

Department of Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT Unit, Gulf International Cancer Center, P.O. Box 5882, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

We report the case of a prostate cancer (PC) patient referred to our center to perform F-18 prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) digital positron emission tomography / computed tomography (PET/CT) scan for biochemical recurrence. PET/CT was unremarkable except for a tiny PSMA-expressing nodule on the right paracolic gutter, which increased in size and PSMA-expression on repeat imaging. Excision of the lesion was consistent with PC peritoneal metastasis.

Purple phototrophic bacteria possess light-harvesting 1 and reaction center (LH1-RC) core complexes that play a key role in converting solar energy to chemical energy. High-resolution structures of LH1-RC and RC complexes have been intensively studied and have yielded critical insight into the architecture and interactions of their proteins, pigments, and cofactors. Nevertheless, a detailed picture of the structure and assembly of LH1-only complexes is lacking due to the intimate association between LH1 and the RC.

Canine circulating in a Kenyan animal shelter.

Institute of Veterinary Bacteriology, University of Bern, Länggassstrasse, Bern, Switzerland.

Animal shelters, especially in resource-poor countries, bring together pets from different regions and with different backgrounds. The crowding of such animals often results in infectious diseases, such as respiratory infections. This study characterized from diseased and apparently healthy dogs housed in an animal shelter in Kenya, to determine their antibiotic resistance profiles, their genetic relatedness, and the presence of dominant clones.

Introduction: Patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) suffer from increased risk of infection, adrenal crises and have a higher mortality rate. Such dismal outcomes have been inferred to immune cell dysregulation because of unphysiological cortisol replacement. As the immune landscape of patients with different types of PAI has not been systematically explored, we set out to immunophenotype PAI patients with different causes of glucocorticoid (GC) deficiency.
