Thunderstorms refer to atmospheric disturbances that are associated with electrical discharges in the form of lightning, with acoustic effects from thunder. They involve the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air which then cools and condenses creating typical cumulonimbus clouds with precipitation. Thunderstorms range in severity but are usually associated with heavy rains, winds and sometimes sleet, hail and snow. If the intensity of a storm increases there may be tornadoes or cyclones. In cases with lightning strikes and minimal or no rain there is an associated risk for the development of quite devastating wild (bush) fires. Lightning strikes may also be associated with the development, or an exacerbation, of potentially lethal natural cardiac or respiratory diseases.

Cardiac disease in young children can be unrecognized until symptoms are unmasked by a precipitating event, such as an infection. We present a case of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery causing clinically significant disease in a four-month-old male with concomitant mitral regurgitation and pulmonary coccidioidomycosis who required modification of his surgical management due to the infection. This case highlights how timely diagnosis and perioperative management and recovery can be affected by concurrent infections in patients with congenital heart disease.

Previous research indicates that African savanna elephants change their movements preceding or coincident with local rainfall and it has been suggested that they respond to thunder in remote storms-perhaps reading seismic cues. We therefore aimed to test if elephants in Northern Kenya adhere to distinct daytime movement states between the wet and dry periods, and whether their abrupt movement changes precede local wet periods in response to lightning strikes from a specific compass heading. In our study site, lightning to the North and East often preceded local rainfall and could possibly be used to anticipate local wet periods, but local rainfall appears a more likely trigger of behavioural change.

Assessment of the hazard risks on HVDC transmission networks due to lightning strikes and faults.

Article Synopsis
  • - HVDC systems effectively lower electricity transmission losses over long distances but face high failure risks from faults and lightning, necessitating a detailed study of potential impacts in the Egypt-Saudi Arabia link using a transient circuit model.
  • - The study evaluates how different lightning strike locations affect transient overvoltages, especially at the rectifier station, revealing extreme voltages during significant lightning events and noting a substantial reduction in overvoltages with surge arresters.
  • - Findings indicate that DC pole-to-ground faults pose a significant risk, producing large overcurrents that can potentially damage the rectifier station, highlighting the importance of robust fault analysis for maintaining safe electrical production standards.

Low-dimensional -based carbon nanostructures, known for their remarkable transport properties and mechanical behaviors, are widely used as reinforcing phases in polymer composites to enhance their performance. While carbon nanocomposites are promising materials for extreme conditions, the damage mechanisms due to charge injection at the interfaces between carbon nanostructures and polymers remain unclear. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated ambipolar charging and structural responses at the interfaces between industrially relevant polymers and carbon nanotubes or graphene upon electron and hole injection.

Lightning strikes cause a spectrum of manifestations in the human body. Keraunoparalysis is a neurological condition where immediate but transient weakness occurs following a lightning strike. Herein, we report a case of a 45-year-old male with an acute onset of right-sided hemiparesis after a lightning strike.
