Background: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) often occurs in elderly patients, causing depression and other symptoms. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) is involved in depression. We investigate the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters of NAc in a POCD model of depression.
Methods: Twenty-month-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into the POCD and Sham groups. The POCD group underwent exploratory laparotomy to establish a POCD depression model, while the Sham group underwent a sham operation. The fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values of the bilateral NAc, behavioural changes of forced swimming test and sucrose preference rate, and pathological changes of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) fluorescent intensity were observed at 15 days (D ) and 30 days (D ) after the operation.
Results: The FA value of the bilateral NAc area in the POCD group was lower than that in the Sham group at the two time periods after the operation (P < 0.05). However, the MD value at D was higher in the POCD group than in the Sham group (P < 0.05). The FA value in the POCD group was lower at D than at D (P < 0.05). The floating time was prolonged while the sucrose preference rate was decreased in the POCD group compared with the Sham group (P < 0.05). The floating time in the POCD group was longer at D than at D . However, the sucrose preference rate in the POCD was lower at D than at D . The GFAP fluorescent intensity in the bilateral NAc region in the POCD group was higher than in the Sham group (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Microstructural changes of the NAc area are associated with POCD related depression. In addition, FA and MD were demonstrated to be effective in diagnosing and monitoring postoperative depression and its severity.

Infradian mood and sleep-wake rhythms with periods of 48 hours and beyond have been observed in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), which even persist in the absence of exogenous timing cues, indicating an endogenous origin. Here, we show that mice exposed to methamphetamine in drinking water develop infradian locomotor rhythms with periods of 48 hours and beyond which extend to sleep length and manic state-associated behaviors in support of a model for cycling in BD. The cycling capacity is abrogated upon genetic disruption of dopamine (DA) production in DA neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) or ablation of nucleus accumbens projecting DA neurons.

Obesity, by any standard, is a global health crisis. Both genetic and dietary contributions to the development and maintenance of obesity were integral factors of our experimental design. As mutations of the melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) are the leading monogenetic cause of obesity, MC4R haploinsufficient rats were fed a range of dietary fat (0-12 %) in a longitudinal design.

Background: Pain is a prevalent comorbidity in numerous clinical conditions and causes suffering; however, the mechanism of pain is intricate, and the neural circuitry underlying pain in the brain remains incompletely elucidated. More research into the perception and modulation of pain within the central nervous system is essential. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of animal behavior, and extensive research has unequivocally demonstrated its significant involvement in the occurrence and development of pain.

Background: The relationship between subregion atrophy in the entire temporal lobe and subcortical nuclei and cognitive decline at various stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is unclear.
Methods: We selected 711 participants from the AD Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, which included 195 cases of cognitively normal (CN), 271 cases of early Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (EMCI), 132 cases of late MCI (LMCI), and 113 cases of AD. we looked at how subregion atrophy in the temporal lobe and subcortical nuclei correlated with cognition at different stages of AD.

Neuropathic pain presents a significant challenge, with its underlying mechanisms still not fully understood. Here, we investigated the role of GluN2C- and GluN2D-containing NMDA receptors in the development of neuropathic pain induced by cisplatin, a widely used chemotherapeutic agent. Through genetic and pharmacological strategies, we found that GluN2D-containing NMDA receptors play a targeted role in regulating cisplatin-induced neuropathic pain (CINP), while sparing inflammatory or acute pain responses.
