Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy are two major life-altering complications of diabetes mellitus. Identifying permissive and protective factors for diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy is imperative so that diabetic quality of life can be optimized and downstream complications can be minimized.
Methods: We performed a large retrospective chart review of 997 patients at a county medical center with a majority Hispanic population.

Background: Evidence suggests that the intrauterine environment shapes offspring cardiovascular disease risk. Although placental dysfunction may be an important pathophysiologic pathway, numerous parental and pregnancy characteristics that influence offspring blood pressure are strong confounders of the mechanistic role of the placenta in observational analyses of singletons. Therefore, we leverage twin- and sibling-based comparison designs to determine whether placental pathology is associated with offspring blood pressure at age 7 while mitigating major sources of confounding.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is recommended for treatment of high-risk aortic stenosis patients. While measuring mean transaortic valve gradient (MG) is crucial in evaluating procedural success, echocardiographic measurements often overestimate direct invasive measurements. This study aimed to examine the discordance between echocardiographic and invasive MGs in TAVI patients and assess their prognostic value on long-term outcomes.

Background: By acquiring a broad social history (BSH), which includes aspects of patients' social needs in addition to their hobbies and activities, values, and perspectives on care, clinicians can provide more patient-centered care, which is known to improve health outcomes. However, the impact of patient-clinician language discordance on acquisition of BSH has not been well studied.
Objective: To ascertain whether language discordance impacts clinicians' acquisition of patients' BSH by interviewing patients, clinicians, and medical interpreters.
