Conglomerate crystals are materials capable of undergoing spontaneous resolution and were responsible for the discovery of molecular chirality. Their relevance to modern chemical and crystallographic sciences has been hindered by the difficulty in identifying and searching materials with this characteristic ability to spontaneously bias their own enantioenrichment. With the release of the November 2021 distribution of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) (version 5.43), a fresh quantity of chiral conglomerate crystals is expected to have been published in the CSD without identification. Indeed, no crystals in the CSD have been identified as a spontaneously resolving conglomerate crystal in their crystallographic information file since the 2019 release, despite the deposition of over 108,000 new crystal structures into the database over the same time period. A manual inspection of crystals deposited between 2020 and 2021 was conducted to identify 343 new chiral materials which exhibit conglomerate crystallization behavior. It is hoped that the continued manual curation of this list will aid those in the crystallographic and synthetic communities to study and exploit this spontaneous enantioenrichment behavior.

Our enantioselective oxidation protocol, based upon hydroperoxides in the presence of a titanium/(,)-hydrobenzoin catalyst, was tested for the first time with aryl benzyl sulfides containing heterocyclic moieties (2-thienyl, 2-pyridyl and benzimidazolyl), two of them being connected with the blockbuster omeprazole drug. Good yields of enantiopure sulfoxides were obtained in most cases. Two exceptions of unsatisfactory enantioselectivity in the oxidation of benzimidazolyl sulfides are reported.

The chirality of metal-organic cages holds enormous potential for novel applications in diverse fields, while it is relatively rare to employ such asymmetric units for the construction of noncentrosymmetric materials. Herein, by self-assembling the 4,4',4''-nitrilotribenzoic acid (HNBA) with bis(cyclopentadienyl)-zirconium dichloride (CpZrCl, Cp=η-CH) in different solvent conditions, we have obtained three hierarchical packing modes of metallo-tetrahedra with distinct spatial symmetry groups (designated as Zr-α, Zr-β, and Zr-γ). Among them, Zr-α employs a simple cubic arrangement and is a common centrosymmetric superstructure, which consists of a pair of equimolar metallo-tetrahedra enantiomers in its unit cell.

Rapid, nondestructive characterization techniques for evaluating the degree of crystallinity and phase segregation of organic semiconductor blend thin films are highly desired for in-line, automated optoelectronic device fabrication facilities. Here, it is demonstrated that reflection polarized optical microscopy (POM), a simple technique capable of imaging local anisotropy of materials, is capable of determining the relative degree of crystallinity and phase segregation of thin films of polymer:fullerene blends. While previous works on POM of organic semiconductors have largely employed the transmission geometry, it is demonstrated that reflection POM provides 3× greater contrast.

Simultaneous formation of helical and sheet-like assemblies from short azapeptides enables spontaneous resolution.

As determined by the homochirality of amino acid building units, protein secondary structures α-helix and β-sheet are single-handed chiral superstructures extending in one and quasi-two dimensions, respectively. Synthetic molecular assemblies that mimic the structural homochirality of proteins would provide insights into the origin of biological homochirality and inform the development of chiral separation techniques. Here we fabricated a homochiral 3D assembly consisting of 1D helical and 2D sheet-like assemblies that feature molecular packings resembling α-helix and β-sheet, respectively.

Molecular Surface Science, Empa, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Dübendorf, Switzerland.

Helicenes represent an important class of chiral organic material with promising optoelectronic properties. Hence, functionalization of surfaces with helicenes is a key step towards new organic material devices. This review presents different aspects of adsorption and modification of metal surfaces with different helicene species.
