Prefrontal cortical maturation coincides with adolescent transitions in social engagement, suggesting that it influences social development. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is important for social interaction, including ACC outputs to the basolateral amygdala (BLA). However, little is known about ACC-BLA sensitivity to the social environment and if this changes during maturation. Here, we used brief (2-hour) isolation to test the immediate impact of changing the social environment on the ACC-BLA circuit and subsequent shifts in social behavior of adolescent and adult rats. We found that optogenetic inhibition of the ACC during brief isolation reduced isolation-driven facilitation of social interaction across ages. Isolation increased activity of ACC-BLA neurons across ages, but altered the influence of ACC on BLA activity in an age-dependent manner. Isolation reduced the inhibitory impact of ACC stimulation on BLA neurons in a frequency-dependent manner in adults, but uniformly suppressed ACC-driven BLA activity in adolescents. This work identifies isolation-driven alterations in an ACC-BLA circuit, and the ACC itself as an essential region sensitive to social environment and regulates its impact on social behavior in both adults and adolescents.

The paper analyzes current discussions concerning the so called "replicability crisis" - a notion describing difficulties in attempts to confirm existing research findings by their additional scrutiny or by new empirical studies. We propose interpretation that this "crisis" may be seen as a manifestation of the increasing inconsistency between, on the one hand, the outdated views on a human being and social structures dominating in the academic mainstream across various disciplines, including psychology and sociology, and, on the other hand, the reality of the emerging new stage of societal evolution, neo-structuration, which brings to the forefront individual agency. Our analysis suggests the possibilities for the future inter-disciplinary paradigmatic shift, which implies putting in the center of research not the idea of a constant or predictably developing individual in the context of solid external structures operating in line with a presumably sustainable "progress".

Background: To explore the influence of leisure activities on cognitive function of middle-aged and elderly people living in hypoxia environment.
Method: Using a cross-sectional random sampling survey method, a total of people over 50 years old who have lived for more than 20 years (average altitude 3000m) in Qinghai plateau region were selected. Demography information, chronic medical history, economic and marital status, and 21 leisure activities (including entertainment, mobile phone use, games, sports, travel, social interaction and housework) were investigated.
Background: We have previously shown that there are 3 unique behavioral symptom clusters, or groupings of temporally related co-occurring behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) representing how an individual's daily BPSD group together relative to their own typical BPSD manifestation across a 21-day period. To further validate these symptom cluster concepts, we examined whether they are predicted by different environmental triggers.
Method: Family caregivers completed daily diary surveys for 8 consecutive days reporting on the physical, social and care environment in addition to their care recipients different BPSD.
