Electronic transitions in molecules due to the absorption or emission of light is a complex quantum mechanical process. Their study plays an important role in the design of novel materials. A common yet challenging task in the study is to determine the nature of electronic transitions, namely which subgroups of the molecule are involved in the transition by donating or accepting electrons, followed by an investigation of the variation in the donor-acceptor behavior for different transitions or conformations of the molecules. In this article, we present a novel approach for the analysis of a bivariate field and show its applicability to the study of electronic transitions. This approach is based on two novel operators, the continuous scatterplot (CSP) lens operator and the CSP peel operator, that enable effective visual analysis of bivariate fields. Both operators can be applied independently or together to facilitate analysis. The operators motivate the design of control polygon inputs to extract fiber surfaces of interest in the spatial domain. The CSPs are annotated with a quantitative measure to further support the visual analysis. We study different molecular systems and demonstrate how the CSP peel and CSP lens operators help identify and study donor and acceptor characteristics in molecular systems.

All-carbon quaternary and tertiary stereocenters connected at the C2-position of functionalizable C3-alkylated indole nucleus are commonly occurring frameworks found in many indole alkaloids of medicinal importance. Their direct access is scarcely reported, a long-standing problem, and developing a unique yet simple method can pave the pathway to an entirely different retrosynthetic route for the total synthesis of these alkaloids. Herein, this problem is addressed by developing an unprecedented branch-selective allylation strategy employing a broad range of structurally and electronically different 3-alkenyl-indoles and allylboronic acids.

Vanadium dioxide (VO) has received significant interest in the context of nanophotonic metamaterials and memories owing to its reversible insulator-metal transition associated with significant changes in its optical and electronic properties. The phase transition of VO has been extensively studied for several decades, and the ways how to control its hysteresis characteristics relevant for memory applications have significantly improved. However, the hysteresis dynamics and stability of coexisting phases during the transition have not been studied on the level of individual single-crystal VO nanoparticles (NPs), although they represent the fundamental component of ordinary polycrystalline films and can also act like nanoscale memory units on their own.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a drastic and important cellular process by which epithelial cells acquire a mesenchymal phenotype. Herein, we evaluated EMT-induced membrane variations using scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), which allows noninvasive nanoscale visualization. The results showed that the number and size of ruffles on the living cell surface decreased as the EMT progressed.

Selective binding and optical sensing of Zn(II) and Cd(II) by L1, HL2, L3, HL4 and HL5 receptors were analysed in aqueous solutions by coupling potentiometric, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission measurements, with the aim to determine the effect of complex stability on selective signalling of metals with similar electronic configurations. All receptors share the same cyclic tetra-amine binding unit attached to a single quinoline (Q) or 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-OHQ) unit (L1 and HL2, respectively), two Q or 8-OHQ moieties (L3 and HL4, respectively), and, finally, two Q and two acetate groups (HL5). The crystal structures of the Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes show that L3 and HL4 feature a cavity in which the larger Cd(II) complex is better fitted than the Zn(II) complex, leading to the formation of more stable Cd(II) complexes.

School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chongqing University of Technology, Chongqing, China.

Background: Automatic sleep staging is essential for assessing sleep quality and diagnosing sleep disorders. While previous research has achieved high classification performance, most current sleep staging networks have only been validated in healthy populations, ignoring the impact of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) on sleep stage classification. In addition, it remains challenging to effectively improve the fine-grained detection of polysomnography (PSG) and capture multi-scale transitions between sleep stages.
