Hydroxytyrosol, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, exhibits certificated benefits for human health. In this study, a biomimetic approach to synthesize hydroxytyrosol from the hydroxylation of tyrosol was established. EDTA-Fe coordination complex served as an active center to simulate tyrosine hydroxylase. HO and ascorbic acid were used as oxygen donor and hydrogen donor, respectively. Hydroxy radical and singlet oxygen contributed to active species. The biomimetic system displayed analogous component, structure, and activity with TyrH. Hydroxytyrosol titer of 21.59 mM, and productivity of 9985.92 mg·L·h was achieved with 100 mM tyrosol as substrate. The proposed approach provided efficient and convenient route to quickly produce high amount of hydroxytyrosol.

Background: Chronic neuropathic pain generally has a poor response to treatment with conventional drugs. Sympathectomy can alleviate neuropathic pain in some patients, suggesting that abnormal sympathetic-somatosensory signaling interactions might underlie some forms of neuropathic pain. The molecular mechanisms underlying sympathetic-somatosensory interactions in neuropathic pain remain obscure.

Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) often presents with a compromised blood-brain barrier (BBB), which hyperglycemia may exacerbate. Pericytes, a key cell for BBB integrity, are potential therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative disorders. Few studies have developed 3D PD cell models incorporating neurovascular units (NVU) through the co-culture of human endothelial, pericytes, astrocytes, and SH-SY5Y cells to evaluate BBB impairment and the role of pericytes under hyperglycemic condition.

The dopamine (DA) system is central to mood regulation, motivation, and reward processing, making it a critical focus for understanding Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). While the dopaminergic system's role in MDD pathophysiology has been acknowledged, gaps remain in linking specific receptor subtypes and genetic factors to depression-like phenotypes. This study explores the interplay between dopamine receptor subtypes (D1-D5) and associated genetic variations, particularly focusing on receptor heterodimers and polymorphisms influencing dopamine biosynthesis, signalling, and metabolism.

New therapeutic agents developed for treating neurological disorders are often tested successfully on rodents. Testing in an appropriate large animal model where there is longer lifespan and comparable brain size to humans should improve translational success and is frequently expected by regulatory bodies. In this project, we aimed to establish a novel sheep model of Parkinson's disease as a large-brained experimental model for translational research.

Peripheral arterial chemoreceptors monitor the levels of arterial blood gases and adjust ventilation and perfusion to meet metabolic demands. These chemoreceptors are present in all vertebrates studied to date but have not been described fully in reptiles other than turtles. The goals of this study were to 1) identify functional chemosensory areas in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) 2) determine the neurochemical content of putative chemosensory cells in these areas and 3) determine the role each area plays in ventilatory and cardiovascular control.
