Published: April 2023

Objective: Since May 2022, non-endemic countries reported the appearance of non-imported cases of monkeypox (Mpox). Spain was one of the most affected countries. The objective of the study was to describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of the first confirmed cases of Mpox in the Canary Islands and the main difficulties in contact tracing.

Methods: Retrospective observational descriptive study with confirmed cases of Mpox and their close contacts in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. We conducted a descriptive analysis, using frequencies and percentages for qualitative variables, and median (interquartile range) for quantitative variables.

Results: One hundred and seventy-seven cases of Mpox were reported in the Canary Islands, with a median age of 39 years (32.8-48.3); 46.6% were HIV seropositive, and 6.8% were foreign. The most frequent clinical symptom was anogenital rash (68.8%), and at pustules stage (61.4%). One hundred and three declared risky sexual behaviors. Only fifty-three (30%) collaborated in the identification of close contacts. There were difficulties in: establishing communication with the cases, communicating the isolation measures, requesting tests, and due to delayed sample processing.

Conclusions: Most common clinical symptom at diagnosis is anogenital rash in pustule stage. Most of the cases report risky sexual relations. The main barriers in contact tracing are the difficulty in contacting cases, the lack of identification data and the lack of experience of health professionals regarding Mpox.

From spermatogenesis to fertilisation: the role of melatonin on ram spermatozoa.

This review presents recent findings on the effect of melatonin on ram spermatozoa. This hormone regulates seasonal reproduction in the ovine species through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but it also exerts direct effects on spermatogenesis, seminal quality and fertility. In the testis, melatonin stimulates blood flow to this organ, but it also appears to be involved in the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells and the secretion of testosterone through the MT1 and MT2 receptors.

Objectives: The effects of acute physical exercise in patients with resistant hypertension remain largely unexplored compared with hypertensive patients in general. We assessed the short-term effects of acute moderate-intensity (MICE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on the clinic (BP) and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) of patients with resistant hypertension.

Methods: Using a crossover randomized controlled design, 10 participants (56 ± 7 years) with resistant hypertension performed three experimental sessions: MICE, HIIE, and control.

Background: In Catalonia, infants <6 months old were eligible to receive nirsevimab, a novel monoclonal antibody against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). We aimed to analyze nirsevimab's effectiveness in hospital-related outcomes of the seasonal cohort (born during the RSV epidemic from October to January 2024) and compared them with the catch-up cohort (born from April to September 2023).

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of all infants born between October 1, 2023, and January 21, 2024, according to their immunization with nirsevimab (immunized and nonimmunized).

Objective: Many patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms (RIAs) underrepresented or excluded from previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing surgery with endovascular treatment (EVT) are still considered for surgical clipping, but the best management of these patients remains unknown.

Methods: The International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial-2 was a randomized trial comparing surgical versus EVT of RIAs considered for surgical clipping, despite the results of previous RCTs, and also eligible for EVT. The primary endpoint was death or dependency according to the modified Rankin Scale score (mRS score > 2) at 1 year.

Guest Segregation in Heteromeric Multicage Systems.

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, TU Dortmund University, Otto-Hahn Str. 6, 44227 Dortmund, Germany.

Dynamically interconvertible metallo-supramolecular multicomponent assemblies, coexisting orthogonally in solution, serve as simplified mimics for complex networks found in biological systems. Building on recent advances in controlling the nonstatistical self-assembly of heteroleptic coordination cages and heteromeric completive self-sorting, i.e.
