Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in children and adolescents.

Methods: Children and adolescents diagnosed with T2DM who visited the Korea University Hospital in 2019 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, including changes in body mass index (BMI)-standard deviation score (SDS), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), diabetes complications, and diabetes management from 2019 to 2020.

Results: Patient mean age and disease duration were 15.48±2.15 and 2.56±1.51 years, respectively. Obese patients accounted for 70.6% of the study population. From 2019 to 2020, mean BMI-SDS (2.21±1.25 vs. 2.35±1.43, =0.044), HbA1c level (6.5%±2.72% vs. 7.3%±3.70%, <0.001), blood pressure (BP), total cholesterol, and non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in all patients increased significantly. Obesity was an independent predictor of increased HbA1c (95% confidence interval, 1.071–50.384; =0.042). HbA1c levels did not increase significantly in nonobese patients, whereas HbA1c (6.45%±2.30% vs. 7.20%±3.05%, <0.001), BMI-SDS (2.88±0.75 vs. 3.08±0.98, =0.045), diastolic BP (=0.037), and total cholesterol values (=0.019) increased in obese patients in 2020 compared to 2019.

Conclusions: During the COVID-19 outbreak, glycemic control and diabetic complications worsened in children and adolescents with T2DM, particularly in obese patients. Close monitoring for glycemic control and diabetic complications is necessary in children and adolescents with T2DM, especially those with obesity.

Leishmania mexicana N-Acetyltransferease 10 Is Important for Polysome Formation and Cell Cycle Progression.

Mol Microbiol

January 2025

Laboratório de Biologia Molecular de Patógenos (LBMP), Departamento de Microbiologia, Imunologia e Parasitologia, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), São Paulo, Brazil.

Leishmania presents a complex life cycle that involves both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. By regulating gene expression, protein synthesis, and metabolism, the parasite can adapt to various environmental conditions. This regulation occurs mainly at the post-transcriptional level and may involve epitranscriptomic modifications of RNAs.

Background: The aims of this cohort study were to identify (1) the incidence and risk factors for axillary web syndrome (AWS) with shoulder movement limitation within 4 weeks after axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for Asian women with breast cancer (BC), and (2) whether early intervention with physical therapy (PT) could improve AWS, and how many PT sessions would be needed.

Methods: A cohort study of patients with BC receiving ALND was performed at Changhua Christian Hospital, Taiwan, between January 2019 and December 2020. Those patients who were diagnosed with AWS with shoulder movement limitation were referred to receive PT twice weekly at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Background: Although anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity is widely studied, only a limited number of echocardiographic studies have assessed cardiac function in breast cancer survivors (BCSs) beyond ten years from anthracycline treatment, and the knowledge of long-term cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in this population is scarce. This study aimed to compare CRF assessed as peak oxygen uptake (V̇O), cardiac morphology and function, and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors between long-term BCSs treated with anthracyclines and controls with no history of cancer.

Methods: The CAUSE (Cardiovascular Survivors Exercise) trial included 140 BCSs recruited through the Cancer Registry of Norway, who were diagnosed with breast cancer stage II to III between 2008 and 2012 and had received treatment with epirubicin, and 69 similarly aged activity level-matched controls.

Bowel regimens before radical cystectomy: An analysis of a modern cohort.

Int J Urol

January 2025

Department of Urology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Introduction: Bowel regimens (BR) before radical cystectomy (RC) are currently not recommended by Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, as prior studies have shown BRs lead to worsened outcomes. However, many of those studies have used historic literature before recent surgical advancements such as minimally invasive RC and have not investigated the impact BRs have by type of urinary diversion. Our goal is to determine the outcomes of preoperative BR in patients undergoing RC based on diversion type using a modern patient cohort.
