Shoreline analysis helps to understand the coastal dynamism for decision-making in coastal management. As there are still doubts in transect-based analysis, this study attempts to understand the influence of transect intervals in shoreline analysis. Shorelines were delineated on high-resolution satellite images in Google Earth Pro for twelve beaches in Sri Lanka under different spatial and temporal scales. Shoreline change statistics were calculated using Digital Shoreline Analysis System in the ArcGIS 10.5.1 software under 50 transect interval scenarios, and influence of the transect interval for shoreline change statistics were interpreted using standard statistical methods. Transect interval error was calculated with respect to the 1 m scenario as this has the best beach representation. Results revealed that there is no any significant difference (p > 0.05) of shoreline change statistics between 1 and 50 m scenarios in each beach. Furthermore, it was found that the error was extremely low up to 10 m scenario and then after it was subject to fluctuate in an unpredictable manner (R < 0.5). Overall, the study concludes that the influence of the transect interval is negligible and 10-m transect interval is ideal in shoreline analysis for the highest efficacy in small sandy beaches.

The biodiversity and distribution of epiphytic orchids are strongly influenced by their relationship with host plants, and environmental variables like elevation, slope, and local climate are key factors in determining the abundance and diversity of these orchids. The aim of this study was to examine the richness of orchid species at different elevations within the research area of Nepal. Sampling was conducted at elevations ranging from 1300 m to 2800 m above sea level, using a systematic sampling technique known as belt transects.

  • Ethiopia's diverse geography supports a wide range of plant species, but forest areas like the Alka forest are declining due to human activities such as farming and overgrazing.
  • A systematic survey conducted in February 2021 identified 48 woody species across 37 families in the Alka forest, revealing a fair regeneration status with significant densities of mature individuals, saplings, and seedlings.
  • The study highlighted the dominance of the Fabaceae family, the presence of four endemic species, and identified Juniperus procera as the most important species in terms of ecological value.

Existing protected areas are anchors for conservation. Safeguarding flora and fauna within their peripheral areas is essential to maintaining their integrity and to potential increases to the area under effective conservation. With the decline in tropical forests, initiatives to increase the area of undisturbed forests under strict protection, particularly those neighboring protected areas, is of critical importance.

Article Synopsis
  • Marine microbial ecologists aim to measure organismal abundance and diversity in ecosystems at a high taxonomic resolution, using various methods to capture accurate data.
  • Traditional flow cytometry estimates the number of microbial cells but lacks the ability to differentiate among many species, while amplicon sequencing offers detailed taxonomic data but often only provides relative abundances.
  • This study introduces a technique that combines genomic internal standards with amplicon sequencing, allowing for accurate absolute cell counts of marine picocyanobacteria, which aligns closely with flow cytometry results, indicating a reliable method for analyzing microbial populations in complex marine environments.

  • * Findings indicate that using tick tubes as part of a comprehensive tick management strategy significantly lowers the tick burden on mice, especially when cotton removal is maximized in late summer.
  • * While the distance between tick tubes didn't impact cotton removal or tick burden, the research suggests further studies on the effect of tick tubes on tick populations and infection rates are needed for better tick-bite risk assessment.
