In this work, chloride ions were used as conservative tracers and supplemented with conservative amounts of chloroethenes (PCE, TCE, Cis-DCE, 1,1-DCE), chloroethanes (1,1,1-TCA, 1,1-DCA), and the carbon isotope ratios of certain compounds, the most representative on the sites studied, which is a novelty compared to the optimization methods developed in the scientific literature so far. A location of the potential missing sources is then proposed in view of the balances of the calculated mixing fractions. A test of the influence of measurement errors on the results shows that the uncertainties in the calculation of the mixture fractions are less than 11%, indicating that the source identification method developed is a robust tool for identifying sources of chlorinated solvents in groundwater.

Chalcones demonstrate significant absorption in the near ultraviolet-visible spectrum, making them valuable for applications such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and nonlinear optics. This study investigates four dibenzalacetone derivatives (DBAd), DBA, DBC, DEP, and DMA, examining the impact of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups and conjugation elongation on their electronic structure in solvents of varying polarities. Using the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), we characterized the excited states of these compounds.

Introduction: Peels are an abundant but still underutilized waste product in the Citrus fruit industry. They contain coumarins with antiadipogenic potential that could be promising targets in new valorization strategies for Citrus peels.

Objectives: In this study, these coumarins, that is, citropten, bergamottin, and 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin (5G7MC), were investigated in Citrus limon peels of different commercial varieties by HPLC-DAD after extraction with ethanol and choline chloride-based natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as alternative extraction agents in green natural product extraction.

A Pyrrole-Fused Nanographene and its Edge-Perchlorinated Derivative Featuring a Corannulene Core and Five N-doped Heptagons.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces, iChEM (Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials), Department of Chemistry, Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361005, China.

A pyrrole-fused analogue of warped nanographene, designated as deca-nitrogen doped 'WNG' (azaWNG), was synthesized through the annular fusion of decapyrroylcorannulene. The resulting azaWNG exhibited extremely limited solubility in common organic solvents and was characterized solely by mass spectrometry. Theoretical calculations revealed that azaWNG has a sunflower-like molecular structure with electron-deficient corannulene as the core and electron-rich pyrrole as the petals, demonstrating a significantly narrower energy gap compared to all-carbon WNG.

A Convenient and Highly Efficient Strategy for Esterification of Poly (γ-Glutamic Acid) with Alkyl Halides at Room Temperature.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Engineering, Environmental Microbial Technology Center of Hubei Province, College of Life Sciences, Hubei University, Wuhan 430062, China.

The presented work discusses the highly efficient esterification of poly (γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) with alkyl halides at room temperature. The esterification reaction was completed within 3 h, and the prepared γ-PGA esters were obtained with excellent yields (98.6%) when 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) was used as a promoter.

An azide-based sampler for monitoring abiotic reduction of chlorinated solvent contaminants in groundwater.

Chemosphere

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Massachusetts, United States. Electronic address:

There is significant interest in monitoring abiotic decomposition of chlorinated solvents at contaminated sites due to large uncertainties regarding the rates of abiotic attenuation of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) under field conditions. In this study, an innovative passive sampling tool was developed to quantify acetylene, a characteristic product of abiotic reduction of TCE or PCE, in groundwater. The sampling mechanism is based on the highly specific and facile click reaction between acetylene and an azide compound to form a biologically and chemically stable triazole product.
