We identify examples of single field inflationary trajectories beyond the slow-roll regime that improve the fit to Planck 2018 data compared to a baseline Λ cold dark matter model with power law form of primordial spectrum and at the same time alleviate existing tensions between different datasets in the estimate of cosmological parameters such as H_{0} and S_{8}. A damped oscillation in the first Hubble flow function-or equivalently a feature in the potential-and the corresponding localized oscillations in the primordial power spectrum partially mimic the improvement in the fit of Planck data due to A_{L} or Ω_{K}. Compared to the baseline model, this model can lead simultaneously to a larger value of H_{0} and a smaller value of S_{8}, a trend that can be enhanced when the most recent SH0ES measurement for H_{0} is combined with Planck and BICEP-Keck 2018 data. Large scale structure data and more precise cosmic microwave background polarization measurements will further provide critical tests of this intermediate fast-roll phase.

EEFSEC deficiency: A selenopathy with early-onset neurodegeneration.

Am J Hum Genet

January 2025

Inborn errors of selenoprotein expression arise from deleterious variants in genes encoding selenoproteins or selenoprotein biosynthetic factors, some of which are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. This study shows that bi-allelic selenocysteine tRNA-specific eukaryotic elongation factor (EEFSEC) variants cause selenoprotein deficiency, leading to progressive neurodegeneration. EEFSEC deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder, manifests with global developmental delay, progressive spasticity, ataxia, and seizures.

This paper examines, using exogenous variation generated by a Finnish pension reform implemented in 2005, the interplay between health and financial incentives to postpone retirement. Based on detailed administrative data on individual health and retirement behavior, we focus on whether individual reactions to incentives vary according to health status and analyze whether individuals with ill health are also able to take advantage of the potential monetary benefits of delayed retirement created by the reform. We find that on average, individuals react to the financial incentives created by the reform as expected.

The question as to why deoxidized SrTiO becomes metallic and superconducting at extremely low levels of oxygen vacancy concentration has been a mystery for many decades. Here, we show that the real amount of effused oxygen during thermal reduction, which is needed to induce superconducting properties, is in the range of only 10/cm and thus even lower than the critical carrier concentrations assumed previously (10-10/cm). By performing detailed investigations of the optical and electrical properties down to the nanoscale, we reveal that filaments are forming during reduction along a network of dislocations in the surface layer.

Loss-of-function variants in ATP6V0A2, encoding the trans Golgi V-ATPase subunit V0a2, cause wrinkly skin syndrome (WSS), a connective tissue disorder with glycosylation defects and aberrant cortical neuron migration. We used knock-out (Atp6v0a2) and knock-in (Atp6v0a2) mice harboring the R755Q missense mutation selectively abolishing V0a2-mediated proton transport to investigate the WSS pathomechanism. Homozygous mutants from both strains displayed a reduction of growth, dermis thickness, and elastic fiber formation compatible with WSS.

Modular design workflow for 3D printable bioresorbable patient-specific bone scaffolds: extended features and clinical validation.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

November 2024

Australian Research Council Training Centre for Multiscale 3D Imaging, Modelling, and Manufacturing, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.

A previously in-house developed patient-specific scaffold design workflow was extended with new features to overcome several limitations and to broaden its adaptability to diverse bone defects, thereby enhancing its fit for routine clinical use. It was applied to three clinical cases for further validation. A virtual surgical resection tool was developed to remove regions of the bone defect models.
