Whole-transcriptome data were used to study the changes in expression of genes coding proteins involved in the calcium regulation processes in the hippocampus of male mice with symptoms of depression caused by chronic social defeat stress. Cacna1g, Cacnb3, Camk1g, Camk2d, Camk2n2, Caly, Caln1, S100a16, and Slc24a4 genes were upregulated in the hippocampus of depressed mice compared to a control, while Cacna2d1, Cacng5, Grin2a, and Calm2 were downregulated. The greatest number of significant correlations was observed between the expression level of Calm2, which showed the highest transcriptional activity, and other differentially expressed genes. Calcium signaling in the hippocampus was assumed to be disrupted in mice exposed to chronic social defeat stress. The involvement of Calm2, Camk1g, Camk2d, and Camk2n2 genes in the process is discussed.

Trends in incidence, prevalence, and mortality of non-communicable diseases in Iraq (2003-2021).

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary.

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become a major public health concern in Iraq, playing a significant role in the country's morbidity and mortality rates. To offer a thorough overview of the patterns and the overall impact of NCDs on public health, this study aims to map the trends in the incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates of NCDs in Iraq between 2003 and 2021.

Methods: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021 were utilized.

Background: Substantial out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures push a large portion of the population below the poverty line, especially those residing in rural areas having low incomes. Individuals from economically disadvantaged states in India incur higher healthcare costs for hospitalization in public health centers than do those from more developed states. Economically poorer households in states such as Bihar and Odisha face significantly higher OOP expenditures for hospitalization in public health centers than do those in economically developed states such as Tamil Nadu.

Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, significantly impacting quality of life and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Traditional treatment approaches often rely on a one-size-fits-all strategy, failing to account for individual variations in pathophysiological mechanisms, drivers, and the principles of personalized medicine. Furthermore, an overemphasis on biomechanical findings from imaging may lead to ineffective interventions and unnecessary surgical procedures, obscuring other important factors that contribute to pain perception.

Research conducted since the turn of the millennium has shown that the quality of life in patients with Tourette syndrome is affected by various health-related factors. The condition's chronic nature, along with its social and emotional implications, can significantly diminish the overall quality of life. Both core symptoms-motor and vocal tics-and associated comorbidities can contribute to functional impairments and reduced well-being.

Introduction: Faced with a backdrop of an increasing chronic disease burden from an ageing global population compounded with rising healthcare costs, health systems are required to implement cost-effective, safe and equitable care through efficient service delivery models. One approach to achieving this is through Starfield's 4Cs of primary healthcare (PHC), which delineates the key attributes of a high-performing PHC system that upholds the pillars of care coordination, first contact of care, continuity of care and comprehensive care. Therefore, this study aims to explore and elucidate the key themes and subthemes related to and extending beyond Starfield's 4Cs of PHC by integrating findings from a comprehensive literature review and a qualitative study.
