The packing interactions of a series of electron donor (D) and electron acceptor (A) charge transfer (CT) near-IR absorbers based on platinum-dithiolene complexes are reinvestigated here as a case study also by using the Hirshfeld surface analysis. This analysis on systems, which exhibit the 1:1, 2:1 and 2:2 columnar stacking patterns between D and A, allows us to point out that several interactions of atoms and fragments are involved in the stacking interactions but also that only a limited fraction of these interactions, limited to the 1:1 D/A columnar stacking case, can be relatable to the absorption features of this class of compounds.

Tetraene-linked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based CMPs were developed Knoevenagel condensation of ditopic active hydrogen containing DPP with tritopic aryl aldehydes. The "tetra-ene" π-arrangement in the molecular framework promotes uninterrupted π-delocalization, resulting in near-infrared (NIR) absorption (∼red edge of 1200 nm), high electrical conductivity in the pristine (10 S m) and doped states (0.2 S m), and moderate energy storage (70 F g).

Multifunctional electrochromic systems with divergent functions are highly sought after but rare and challenging to develop. Here, we report the synthesis and multi-functional electrochromic behaviour (multi-colour modulation, visible-to-near IR absorption switching, and electrofluorochromism) of electron-deficient indenofluorene-based systems. The compounds (IF-IF) have been obtained via Knoevenagel condensation of indenofluorenone (IF) with various nucleophiles (malononitrile, benzylcyanide, dimethyl malonate, methyl cyanoacetate, benzothiazole-2-acetonitrile).

The linear electronic dispersion relation of graphene endows the atomically thin carbon layer with a large intrinsic optical nonlinearity, with regard to both parametric and photothermal processes. While plasmons in graphene nanostructures can further enhance nonlinear optical phenomena, boosting resonances to the technologically relevant mid- and near-infrared (IR) spectral regimes necessitates patterning on ∼10 nm length scales, for which quantum finite-size effects play a crucial role. Here we show that thermoplasmons in narrow graphene nanoribbons can be activated at mid- and near-IR frequencies with moderate absorbed energy density, and furthermore can drive substantial third-harmonic generation and optical Kerr nonlinearities.

The interplay of ESIPT+TICT mechanisms in 1,8-naphthalimide-hydroxyquinoline (NQ-OH) molecular rotor were reported for the near-IR 'turn-on' emission (λ 600 nm) and ratiometric (A/A) absorbance-based detection of Al ions in aqueous medium and live cells which were supported by NMR, IR and CV techniques. The limit of detection (LOD) for Al ions is 100 nM and 14.57 nM.

Panchromatic dyes have been highly useful in the realm of optical devices. Here, we report that panchromatic dyes with heterohelicenes have been successfully synthesized using a donor-acceptor strategy. Our synthesis resulted in the creation of π-extended aza[5]helicene oligomers with butadiyne linkages, which displayed bathochromically shifted absorption and emission spectra.
