Published: February 2023

The online monitoring of a multi-jet electrospinning process is critical to the achievement of stable mass electrospinning for industrial applications. In this study, the construction of an ejection state recognition system of a multi-jet electrospinning process based on image processing is reported. The ejection behaviors regarding multi-nozzle electrospinning were recorded by CMOS industrial cameras in real time. The characteristic information regarding the multi-jet cone tip was obtained by processing the images regarding Roberts operator edge detection, Hough transform line detection, and mask histogram analysis. The jet anomalies of the hanging droplets in the nozzle outlet area could be obtained and identified by the vision. The identification accuracy towards the target hanging droplets was more than 85%. This work reports the intelligent control of large-scale multi-nozzle electrospinning equipment.

This technical note provides a step-by-step guide for the design and construction of a temperature-controlled nozzle-free electrospinning device. The equipment uses a rotating mandrel partially immersed within a polymer solution to produce fibers in an upward motion by inducing the formation of multiple Taylor cones and subsequently multi-jetting out of an electrified open surface. Free-surface electrospinning can overcome limitations and drawbacks associated with single and multi-nozzle spinneret configurations, such as low yield, limited production capacity, nonuniform electric field distribution, and clogging.

Novel cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hybrid fibers, fabricated via angled dual-nozzle electrospinning, were used for the encapsulation of probiotics to enhance their gastrointestinal stability. In this study, Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 (EcN) cells were encapsulated within PVA/CA composite mats, where CA enhanced the bacterial stability under gastric conditions and PVA provided protection against the toxic solvent during the electrospinning process. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that EcN was successfully encapsulated within the hybrid fibers.

Arced Multi-Nozzle Electrospinning Spinneret for High-Throughput Production of Nanofibers.

Micromachines (Basel)

December 2019

Department of Instrumental and Electrical Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China.

The stable and continuous ejection of multiple jets with high densities is the key to the application of electrospinning technology. An arced multi-nozzle spinneret was designed to increase the production efficiency of electrospinning. The distribution of the electrical field was simulated to optimize the nozzles' distribution of the spinneret.
