We report the successful inactivation of strain by femtosecond infrared (IR) laser radiation at the resonant wavelengths of 3.15 μm and 6.04 μm, chosen due to the presence of characteristic molecular vibrations in the main structural elements of the bacterial cells in these spectral ranges: vibrations of amide groups in proteins (1500-1700 cm), and C-H vibrations in membrane proteins and lipids (2800-3000 cm). The underlying bactericidal structural molecular changes were revealed by the stationary Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, with the spectral peaks parameters being obtained by Lorentzian fitting with the hidden peaks revealed by the second derivative calculations, while no visible damage to the cell membranes was identified by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

The intersection of electromagnetic radiation and neuronal communication, focusing on the potential role of biophoton emission in brain function and neurodegenerative diseases is an emerging research area. Traditionally, it is believed that neurons encode and communicate information via electrochemical impulses, generating electromagnetic fields detectable by EEG and MEG. Recent discoveries indicate that neurons may also emit biophotons, suggesting an additional communication channel alongside the regular synaptic interactions.

Biosensors operating in the terahertz (THz) region are gaining substantial interest in biomedical analysis due to their significant potential for high-sensitivity trace-amount solution detection. However, progress in compact, high-sensitivity chips and methods for simple, rapid and trace-level measurements is limited by the spatial resolution of THz waves and their strong absorption in polar solvents. In this work, a compact nonlinear optical crystal (NLOC)-based reflective THz biosensor with a few arrays of asymmetrical meta-atoms was developed.

Background: Photothermal therapy (PTT) is one of the effective and non-invasive strategies which hold great promise for improving the treatment of cancer cells. PTT is based on activating a photosensitizer by infrared light irradiation and producing heat and reactive species and apoptosis in the tumor area.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of photothermal/chemotherapy on melanoma cancer cells using poly (2-amino phenol)/gold (P2AO/AuNPs) and doxorubicin (DOX).

The use of optogenetic tools offers an excellent method for spatially and temporally regulated gene and protein expression in cell therapeutic approaches. This could be useful as a concomitant therapeutic measure, especially in small body compartments such as the inner ear, for example, during cochlea implantation, to enhance neuronal cell survival and function. Here, we used the blue light activatable CRY2/CIB system to induce transcription of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in human cells.

Taking into account phase-polarization interactions is crucial for the formation of spatially structured laser beams. The effects that arise in this context can lead to the modulation of individual field components and the transformation of the overall light field. In this study, we investigate the impact of phase and polarization distributions with radial dependencies in polar coordinates on the longitudinal component of laser beams passing through a transmissive spatial light modulator (SLM) based on twisted nematic liquid crystals.
