Objectives: Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is a rare disorder and non-surgical cases require careful evaluation, since may be due to genetic, autoimmune, or metabolic factors.
Case Presentation: We present a 15-year-old girl with a previous diagnosis of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency due to G985A homozygous mutation. She was admitted to the emergency department with severe hypocalcaemia and inappropriately normal level of intact parathyroid hormone. Main etiologies of primary HypoPT were excluded, so it was suspected to be related to MCAD deficiency.
Conclusions: The association of fatty acid oxidation disorders and HypoPT has been previously described in the literature, but its link to MCAD deficiency has only been reported once. We present the second case describing the coexistence of both rare diseases. Since HypoPT can be a life-threatening condition, we suggest calcium levels be assessed in these patients on a regular basis. Further research is needed to better understand this complex association.

MicroRNAs play essential roles in biological processes by regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Our previous studies suggested the role of miR-26a in porcine fat accumulation. Here, through gain- and loss-of-function analyses, we first showed that miR-26a increased the proliferation of porcine preadipocytes by promoting cell division and that miR-26a inhibited the preadipocyte differentiation.

Medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are valuable platform compounds for the production of biotechnologically relevant chemicals such as biofuels and biochemicals. Two distinct pathways have been implemented in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the biosynthetic production of MCFAs: (i) the mutant fatty acid biosynthesis (FAB) pathway in which the fatty acid synthase (FAS) complex is mutated and (ii) a heterologous multispecies-derived reverse β-oxidation (rBOX) pathway. Hexanoic acid has become of great interest as its acyl-CoA ester, hexanoyl-CoA, is required for the biosynthesis of olivetolic acid (OA), a cannabinoid precursor.

Prenatal exposure to bisphenol analogs (BPs) may pose hazards to offspring's health; however, their underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. DNA methylation, a major epigenetic mechanism, may be involved in early programming following environmental disturbances. In this prospective study, we investigated associations between prenatal BPs exposure and the placental DNA methylation levels of 14 candidate genes in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway among 205 mother-infant pairs and explored the potential mediating role of the DNA methylation in the association of prenatal BPs exposure with anthropometric measurements of infants aged 1 year.
