Periodic assembly of heterogeneous nanoparticles provides a strategy for integrating distinct nanocatalyst blocks where their synergic effects can be explored for diverse applications. To achieve the synergistic enhancement, an intimate clean interface is preferred which however is usually plagued by the bulky surfactant molecules used in the synthesis and assembly process. Herein, we showed the creation of one-dimensional Pt-Au nanowires (NWs) with periodic alternating Pt and Au nanoblocks, by assembling Pt-Au Janus nanoparticles with the assistance of peptide T7 (Ac-TLTTLTN-CONH). It is demonstrated that the Pt-Au NWs showed much-improved performance in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), exhibiting 5.3 times higher specific activity and 2.5 times higher mass activity than the current state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. In addition, the periodic heterostructure also improves the stability of Pt-Au NWs in the MOR, where the Pt-Au NWs retained 93.9% of their initial mass activity much higher than commercial Pt/C (30.6%).

Efficient C-C bond cleavage and oxidation of alcohols to CO is the key to developing highly efficient alcohol fuel cells for renewable energy applications. In this work, we report the synthesis of core/shell Au/Pt nanowires (NWs) with stepped Pt clusters deposited along the ultrathin (2.3 nm) stepped Au NWs as an active catalyst to effectively oxidize alcohols to CO.

Heterogeneous ternary Pt-Ni-Au nanowires (NWs) with randomly distributed Pt-Ni and Pt-Au micro phases were successfully synthesized following an oriented attachment mechanism. The as-prepared NWs exhibit enhanced activity and durability in both a rotating disk electrode (RDE) and single-cell, originating from the one dimensional (1D) heterogeneous structure.

Optimization of Ohmic Contacts to p-GaAs Nanowires.

Nanoscale Res Lett

November 2019

Optoelectronics Research Centre, Physics Unit, Tampere University, Tampere, Finland.

The performance of Ohmic contacts applied to semiconductor nanowires (NWs) is an important aspect for enabling their use in electronic or optoelectronic devices. Due to the small dimensions and specific surface orientation of NWs, the standard processing technology widely developed for planar heterostructures cannot be directly applied. Here, we report on the fabrication and optimization of Pt/Ti/Pt/Au Ohmic contacts for p-type GaAs nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy.

The ability for tuning not only the composition but also the type of surface facets of alloyed nanomaterials is important for the design of catalysts with enhanced activity and stability through optimizing both ensemble and ligand effects. Herein we report the first example of ultrathin platinum-gold alloy nanowires (PtAu NWs) featuring composition-tunable and (111) facet-dominant surface characteristics, and the electrocatalytic enhancement for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). PtAu NWs of different bimetallic compositions synthesized by a single-phase and surfactant-free method are shown to display an alloyed, parallel-bundled structure in which the individual nanowires exhibit Boerdijk-Coxeter helix type morphology predominant in (111) facets.
