The brain's ability to perform efficient and fault-tolerant data processing is strongly related to its peculiar interconnected adaptive architecture, based on redundant neural circuits interacting at different scales. By emulating the brain's processing and learning mechanisms, computing technologies strive to achieve higher levels of energy efficiency and computational performance. Although efforts to address neuromorphic solutions through hardware based on top-down CMOS-based technologies have obtained interesting results in terms of energetic efficiency improvement, the replication of brain's self-assembled and redundant architectures is not considered in the roadmaps of data processing electronics.

A new high-sensitivity, low-cost, Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) sensor allows for the rapid multiplex detection of foodborne pathogens in raw poultry. Self-assembled microspheres are used to pattern a hexagonal close-packed array of nanoantennas onto a side-polished multimode fiber core. Each microsphere focuses UV radiation to a photonic nanojet within a layer of photoresist on the fiber which allows the nanoantenna geometry to be controlled.

It has been reported that radiotherapy has an in situ vaccine effect that provides tumor antigens following irradiation, helping to activate antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Herein, a new vaccine approach is developed by combining genetically engineered irradiated tumor cell debris (RTD) and hyaluronic acid (HA), termed HA@RTD.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic paramyxovirus in the genus Henipavirus that is prevalent in Southeast Asia. NiV leads to severe respiratory disease and encephalitis in humans and animals, with a mortality rate of up to 75%. Despite the grave threat to public health and global biosecurity, no medical countermeasures are available for humans.

Janus base nanotubes are novel, self-assembled nanomaterials. Their original designs were inspired by DNA base pairs, and today a variety of chemistries has developed, distinguishing them as a new family of materials separate from DNA origami, carbon nanotubes, polymers, and lipids. This review article covers the principal examples of self-assembled Janus base nanotubes, which are driven by hydrogen-bond and π-π stacking interactions in aqueous environments.
